The WOODSmith Construction North Riding Senior Cup returns for yet another campaign, as the Steelmen enter the competition at the second round stage.

The county cup hasn’t graced the terraces at Green Lane for over a year, when eventual champions, Scarborough Athletic, came from behind to sink Redcar’s title dreams in a thrilling semi-final affair.

Last year, the competition brought the innaugural El Pacitto, as Redcar Town progressed at the end of a disappointing penalty shootout.

Back at the Lane tonight, Redcar will hope for safe passage into the third round, as a good warm-up for Saturday’s Isuzu FA Vase clash with Northern Counties East League flyers, Silsden AFC.

Of course, on the other side of the halfway line, fellow Teesside club Thornaby will try everything in their power to pull off a shock against the Steelmen, especially considering their last visit to the Redcar seafront…

Here’s everything you need to know about tonight’s WOODSmith Construction North Riding Senior Cup second round tie…

Playing their trade in the Northern League Division Two after a disappointing relegation last season, Thornaby are a club familiar to those of a Redcar persuasion.

Formed as recently as 2000, the Blues were previously known as Stockton FC, using a local cricket field as their base for home games.

Thornaby have since invested in Teasdale Park, developing a ground that was once categorised by poor facilities to the point of winning a hospitality award in 2015.

On the pitch, the club have bounced between the two Northern League divisions since their inception.

In 2021 – lead by Paul Edwards – the Blues launched a bid for the Division One title, falling just short come the end end of the campaign.

Still, the club recorded their highest ever finish, sitting in third behind Consett, and title-winners North Shields.

Their previous finish rubs more salt into the wound of last season’s devastating relegation, as after the departure of Edwards, the club took a dive down to the depths of the division.

With Dean Browne at the helm, Thornaby are striving to rebuild and come back stronger, but after a disgusting arson attack on their ground before the season began, currently face a mid-table slog in their first season back at step six.

Back to winning ways, the Steelmen bounced back from a string of poor results emphatically last weekend.

Matty Tymon lead the charge with a quick second half brace, as Redcar Athletic smashed EIGHT passed Tow Law in their own backyard.

Layton Watts also proved a breath of fresh air after his introduction, netting a goal-of-the-season contender as part of his own impressive second half double.

The result proved the perfect response to a disappointing home defeat to Penrith, a loss Gary Forster labelled as the worst of the season.

Redcar will hope for a better showing in front of their own fans this evening, having only won twice from seven games at Green Lane so far this season.

For the Blues, tonight also comes on the back of an eight goal showing.

Thornaby ran riot over struggling Brandon United at the weekend in their biggest victory of the season, a welcome turn of fate from early woes as life in step six got off to a frustrating start.

A record afternoon for Redcar Athletic, Thornaby left Green Lane rather deflated after their last visit.

A chilly Boxing Day affair, with both sides at the tail-end of a poor spate of bad form, the Steelmen ran riot over their Teesside rivals, scoring a club record NINE in the Northern League.

Hat-tricks for both new boy Craig Hutchinson and fan-favourite Donny Holdsworth drove the shock thumping, with Mason McNeill’s only goal for the club also coming against his former club.

We’re sure you don’t need an excuse to watch this one again…

With a MASSIVE game for the club on Saturday, Gary Forster may well seek to adjust his team somewhat for tonight’s county cup affair.

The competition will provide a great chance for a number of fringe players to stake their claim for a place in Forster’s first choice side, especially with an important Isuzu FA Vase match just around the corner.

One man who will be optimistic for a start this evening is Layton Watts, whose introduction against Tow Law on Saturday added extra impetus – and goals – to an already firing Redcar side.

In the aftermath, Gary labelled the midfielder one of the best technical players at the club, affirming his position that with patience, Layton could be a really key assett come the latter stages of the season.

Ultimately, the gaffer will have almost a full squad available to pick from this evening, with only Jack Norton and Anthony Bell confirmed absences through suspension.

Centre-back Adam Wheatley is a doubt, following a knock picked up during the Penrith match was saw him sidelined in Tow Law at the weekend.
