The Assistant boss offered his thoughts on a 4-0 victory over West Auckland Town.

Redcar Athletic Assistant boss Dave McTiernan praised his players efforts out of possession, as West Auckland Town became the latest to be put to the sword in a four-goal demolition at Green Lane.

The stand-in gaffer had words for the Steelmen’s stellar defence, hailing a ‘brilliant start’ to the season, albeit at such an early stage.

Just three days on from a statement opening day victory over Kendal Town, Redcar Athletic hit four once again in similar fashion, seeing off a well-fancied West Auckland Town in some style.

Bradley Fewster opened the scoring from the penalty spot, turning home from Mark Anderson’s seeking long pass to double the tally.

Oscar Fletcher found the target against his former side to take matters beyond a frustrated West Auckland, Adam Boyes off the bench and onto the scoresheet to wrap up the affair.

Pleased with the performance more so than the result, Assistant Manager Dave McTiernan lauded his players discipline, picking up on efforts out of possession which shouldn’t go unnoticed.

“It was a great performance, again.” Dave McTiernan said. “Very disciplined.”

“West Auckland gave us a right game, you know. First half it was tight.

“The lads stuck the task. Each player put a shift in, in and out of possession.

“Everyone is looking at the goals, but what we’re looking at as a management team is what they’re doing out of possession, and that’s working really hard, and that’s the biggest plus I can give everybody.

“Everybody is working hard for each other, for the management team and the football club.

“So, yeah, a brilliant start.”

On the remarkable attacking contributions of Bradley Fewster, who sits atop the scoring charts for the division after two games, Dave labelled the forward ‘one of the best’ in the area.

The assistant boss and first team coach Lee Bullock have previous experience coaching Fewster, and Dave confessed his delight to see the 27-year-old donning the red and navy, nevertheless scoring hatfuls.

“I coached Brad at Middlesbrough, and I’ve coached him at Whitby (Town).”

“Me and ‘Bully’ have a good relationship with Brad.

“He’s one of the best about. He’s a goalscorer. Like I said, we were delighted to get him over the line, and he’s come to this football club with the right mindset.

“He just wants to score goals, and to do well for this club, and I’m absolutely over the moon for him.”

Eight goals in just two games, it’s important too to recognise the efforts of a stellar backline, and Dave McTiernan certainly embodied that.

He said: “I’ve just said to the lads in the changing rooms, we can talk about all those goals that we’re scoring, but it all comes from the back.

“Everything that we do is building from the back. In possession, out of possession, the leadership skills.

“Brilliant, and that’s another clean sheet for young Josh Mazfari in goal.

“Like I said, it’s a brilliant start, but it’s going to be a long season.”
