The midfielder offered his thoughts on defeat to Easington Colliery.
Oscar Fletcher says he and his teammates were second best in a season first home defeat at the hands of Easington Colliery.
The midfielder admitted Redcar were far from their usual selves, disappointed to lose but no less than was deserved on the night.
Off-colour from minute one against an Easington Colliery side more than up to the challenge, Brad Hird’s double condemned the Steelmen to a first defeat at Green Lane since April.
The forward turned home opportunistically inside the opening exchanges, snatching the spoils from the spot in the dying embers.
Callum Guy turned home a somewhat fortunate finish of his own to see Redcar level for the most of ninety, chance after chance to go ahead since left a begging.
Redcar Athletic 1-2 Easington Colliery
Our report as the Steelmen taste defeat at Green Lane.
A huge opportunity to further the lead at the top of the table gone amiss, midfielder Oscar Fletcher best summed the mood up as ‘disappointed.’
He claimed the Steelmen were rightfully beaten given the performance, but added some much needed context to only a second defeat in twenty.
“I think all of us are disappointed.” Oscar said. “Not only with the result but the performance.”
“The lads knew coming off the pitch that ultimately we got what we deserved for not doing the basics right.
“We were second best all over the pitch and due to that we weren’t able to show the quality that we know we have, and that we’ve shown for a large portion of the season.”
“I think the first half of the season has been a success in general for us. We’re top of the table and still in the (Isuzu) FA Vase. That puts us in a great position.
“There’s still frustrations there as we know there’s been chances to increase the gap at the top of the table on multiple occasions this season, like tonight, and we have missed them.
“That comes from the high expectations we put on ourselves, so hopefully we can stick at the top of the table, and reach our goals.”
Redcar Athletic will have the chance to respond to only a third defeat in all competitions at the weekend, a much-needed break from league action taking Carl Jarrett’s men to Whickham.
Oscar admitted he and his teammates were looking forward to the challenge, victory monumental for the history of football club.
He added: “I think next Saturday is a great chance for us to bounce back, and the lads are all looking forward to it.”
“We’ve had a good run of form and picked up some massive results recently, so hopefully we will have a good week of training, and put things right next Saturday.”
