Knockout football returns, as Esh Winning await in the Isuzu FA Vase.

Once again, Redcar Athletic have a fresh opportunity to rewrite their fortunes from a poor start to the season, with a break in league action for the Isuzu FA Vase.

The Steelmen travel to County Durham and the Windows Plus Roofs Arena, with Esh Winning the hosts of the first qualifying round tie.

Esh currently sit 20th in the second division of the Ebac Northern League, faring similarly to Athletic in the season’s opening weeks.

The Stags were also without a number of key players, but upon their return, pose a real threat to the Steelmen in this afternoon’s knockout encounter.

Here’s everything you need to know about our Isuzu FA Vase First Qualifying Round tie…

Formed in 1967 as Esh Winning Pineapple (don’t ask, we don’t know either), the Stags play their football at the Windows Plus Roofs Arena, on the site of an old mine.

Formely known as West Terrace, the location for the ground is fitting, as Esh Winning itself could be described as an old colliery village.

On the pitch, the Stags are a side familiar with the Northern League, having been a consistent member since 1982.

Esh have remained a second division side for the majority of their tenure, boasting two forays into the top flight from 2002-2006, and 2009-2011.

The club claimed their only piece of silverware in 2009, raising the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup, following a 3-0 victory over Sunderland RCA at Ryton’s Kingsley Park.

Given the expectations, the Steelmen have gotten off to a poor start in the new campaign.

From three home league games, Redcar have amassed a lone point, as Matty Tymon prodded home a last gasp equaliser against Northallerton Town at the start of August.

Athletic’s Emirates FA Cup dreams also came a cropper, with Tadcaster Albion snatching progression from a lone shot on target at the So-Trak Stadium.

Fresh off the back of a short hiatus from competitive football, Gary Forster will view this afternoon’s Izusu FA Vase clash as yet another chance to spark the season into life.

Esh Winning are a side who have faced similar fortunes in their opening matches, so could present an ideal opportunity to restore some much needed confidence.

Unlike Redcar, however, the Stags did manage to etch out their first win on Wednesday night, against potential second qualifying round opponents, Jarrow.

Goals from Aaron Jackson and Bradley Tyrie gave Esh the advantage over the hosts, whose late strike proved a mere consolation after steadfast defending.

First team boss Gary Forster is likely to make a number of changes to the side which lost to Heaton Stannington 10 days ago, with suspensions, restrictions, and new additions adding to his selection dilema.

A red card for Mason McNeill means the fullback will miss the qualifying round clash, whilst loanee Nathan Fisher is ineligible for the competition.

Donny Holdsworth and Joe Ferguson remain sidelined by injury, with their long-awaited return due in around six weeks time.

As for new additions, Gary welcomed young midfielder Jack Harrison into his ranks this week, who is set to be amongst the squad for this afternoon’s game.

There are still a few places available on the team coach for this afternoon’s Isuzu FA Vase clash, and you can book your seat by emailing, or by messaging the club across social media.

The coach departs Green Lane at 12pm sharp, so those interested are urged to act sooner rather than later.
