Redcar Athletic continued an unbeaten start to the season with a historic Emirates FA Cup victory over local rivals, Guisborough Town.

Adam Boyes took the plaudits for the goal. The forward turned home on the rebound to see the Steelmen ahead come the break, despite an array of missed chances.

Josh Mazfari made a sensational string of saves in the second half, as Redcar booked a date with Pickering Town in the First Qualifying Round on Saturday 30th August.

For the first time since opening day, stand-in boss Dave McTiernan was forced to make two changes to the team which drew at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium at the weekend.

One such addition was Mark Anderson, who found early success through the centre when his driven pass to Bradley Fewster was fired wide of the mark.

The midfielder soon got his head to a deep cross from Dane Burlace, to no avail, before his long ball to Oscar Fletcher was tucked away at the second time of asking by Adam Boyes.

Guisborough had some success of their own in the opening exchanges.

Mustapha Abdulahi broke to the byline, although Sonni Coleman couldn’t convert, whilst Joe Ferguson barrelled over the bar from deep in the midfield.

Bradley Fewster curled a mirror effort high of the mark to open the second period, as Ryan Catterick stooped to deny Oscar Fletcher.

Callum Martin lead a breakaway for the visitors, striking hard at Josh Mazfari, who reacted well to push the ball clear.

The shot-stopper dropped to ground to stave off James Frazer as the minutes ticked down, impressing again with a fingertip stop as Joseph Pickett took aim from range.

Concern came five minutes from time when John Howard – a tenacious figure in the heart of midfield – suffered a nasty injury and had to be withdrawn.

The stretcher was called, but soon dismissed, and Joe Taylor came on in his place, leading a counter-charge to no effect.

Guisborough committed bodies forward as the minutes ebbed away, and only a sensational recovery from Joe Thompson stopped Bryan Taylor from netting from the halfway line with Catterick astray.
