Match Reaction: Redcar Athletic Reserves 1-7 Redcar Newmarket
Buoyant from a weekend win, Redcar Athletic’s Reserves were so cruelly brought down to Earth, as the champions-elect ran riot at Redcar College.
Fed a glut of hope by a third minute strike from David Bradley, Steve Simpkin’s side dissolved as Redcar Newmarket’s potent strike force proved their worth.
The league-leaders clocked six by the time the contest made halfway, a treble from captain Lewis Calvert and a sensational strike from former Steelman Liam Williams stealing the headlines.
Steve Simpkin
Redcar Athletic Reserves Manager
“The old bad habits crept back in.
“Although we took an early lead, the two quick-fire goals from Newmarket really knocked the stuffing out of us.
“All heads dropped, standards dropped, communication became non-existent, people froze and didn’t want the ball, and we looked like a beaten team. Not a good place to be with over an hour to play.
“But for us to capitulate so easily was simply not acceptable. The time and space that we allowed them made it so easy to pick us off time and time again, and they took their chances superbly.
“Sadly though, I feel any opposition would’ve enjoyed themselves tonight, as we simply didn’t turn up or compete.
“Three games left to play, and I’ve asked in the changing room after tonight for a reaction, hopefully that will come on Saturday at Whitby.”
