The Assistant boss offered his thoughts on an Emirates FA Cup victory over Consett.

Redcar Athletic Assistant boss Dave McTiernan hailed a ‘winning mentality,’ praising his side for coping under pressure to book a place in the Preliminary Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Bradley Fewster’s well-taken hat-trick made the difference on the afternoon, the acting gaffer pleased with the team performance, and left relatively unmoved by a late fightback, given the result.

Ahead inside just seven minutes, Bradley Fewster guided home a second from Mark Anderson’s incisive through ball, repeating the feat following the restart of play to seal a neat treble.

Former Redcar man Isaac Walker sparked a resurgence for the Durham Steelmen, Liam Colledge netting the second, too little too late for the Northern Premier League East outfit to salvage a replay.

Quizzed on the Steelmen’s poor record in the competition, the assistant boss doubled down on creating a ‘winning mentality,’ claiming previous fortunes weren’t of interest to the management team.

“We didn’t look at anything in the past.” McTiernan admitted. “For us, it’s just about winning games of football.”

“Yes, it was the (Emirates) FA Cup, but we just wanted to try and build on those two games that we have won. We want to build a winning mentality in the changing room.”

Three goals to the good on the hour, two late strikes from the home side made for a tense end to the tie, something Dave McTiernan claimed wasn’t half as important as the result itself.

The Assistant Manager argued in the Emirates FA Cup, matches are all about the result, but praised the Steelmen’s defence for their handling a late onslaught of pressure.

“The result is the most important thing.” He said.

“Of course, we can look at things and say it was a little tight towards the end.

“Conditions played a part. Their direct football, and, credit to them, they changed it up, you know. They threw bodies on the line, and tried to press us back.

“To be fair to our centre-halves, they dealt with everything well.

“But yeah, to answer the question, it’s all about the win, really.”

On Bradley Fewster – three goals to his name this afternoon – Dave McTiernan had little to say, the forward in an unbelievable spate of form, and forging an unstoppable partnership with Adam Boyes.

“Well, at the minute, what can you make of him?” McTiernan returned.

“He’s scored three goals, but it’s not just that, it’s his all-round work rate and his performance.

“Him and ‘Bosh’ today, it was nice to see them linking up well. Bosh did all the unselfish stuff, but Brad got the goals. As I said, it’s a team performance.

“We’re in the next round of the (Emirates) FA Cup, and that’s the most important thing.”
