Match Reaction: Redcar Athletic Reserves 1-3 TIBS

Steve Simpkin reflected on a disappointing end to the season for Redcar Athletic Reserves, as a second half resurgence clinched all three points for TIBS FC.

The Reserves lead at the break through a Lucas Bell strike from outside the area, fourth placed TIBS on top by the end of play after a late three-goal comeback.

Whilst not the season finale Steve Simpkin and his side will have planned, the Reserves’ boss praised their efforts in what proved a dominant first half.

“With six regular starters missing, it was always going to be a tough day against fourth placed TIBS FC.” Simpkin said.

“In the first half, I’d say we were the better side. Our organisation and shape out of possession had TIBS resorting to hopeful balls from centre back, whilst in possession, we moved the ball very well.

“We played in their half and created several good chances. So going in 1-0 up I think was deserved.”

Unfortunately, such success wasn’t to last, Steve Simpkin frustrated to see incisive play devolve into hopeful long balls.

“Sadly, in the second half, our season long demons reappeared.” He conceded.

“Defenders and midfielders didn’t get themselves on the ball, and we ended up playing long, hopeful balls forward.

“It was frustrating to watch when the halftime message had been ‘more of the same, please’.

“Gradually, TIBS got a foothold in the game as our standards dropped, and when the equaliser came it was no surprise.

“From there on in, and with their tails up, TIBS were the better side, adding two more goals as our young team’s heads dropped.

“A mildly disappointing end to the season, the positive I guess being two of our Under-16 squad getting minutes, which is always nice to see.”

On the season as a whole, Simpkin admitted it had been difficult, but found praise for those that had stepped up and gave their all, especially those experiencing senior football for the first time.

“It was always going to be tough.” He said. “We were rebuilding the squad after so many departures last summer, but the lads who came in, some experiencing Saturday adult football for the first time, did themselves proud and stuck at it all year.”

“I’m proud of them and all the lads, and want to thank them for all their dedication and commitment.”
