The investment will aim to pull in more visitors to Redcar by creating a 'vibrant town centre'.

Redcar and Cleveland Council have announced details of the new project which will see improvements to the area such as new street furniture, more plants and trees, improved lighting and more.

Plans have been discussed as part of the Redcar Town Deal which was struck in 2019, awarding a £25 million grant to Redcar by the Government’s Town Deal programme. A board was subsequently established making up of industry experts, business leaders, and community representatives.

The Council say the proposed works are with the aim to help create a ‘vibrant town centre’, which will, in turn, attract more visitors and more support for local independent businesses, jobs and further investment.

Members of the public including local business owners are being invited to a drop-in event on Thursday 22nd June to see new images of the proposals. The event takes place at Rediscover Redcar on West Terrace between 10am and 7pm.

The project aims to:

  • improve the appearance of the high street by creating an uncluttered environment and developing spaces for events and activities;
  • improve the appearance of the southern section of the esplanade by resurfacing and widening pavements, introducing seating and lighting. Dundas and Bath Street will accommodate some parking re-located from the Esplanade;
  • improve Station Road by improving pavements, road crossing and street furniture.

These plans are the latest iteration of the Redcar Town Deal, which has also earmarked further redevelopment plans, including one for a new Coastal Activity Hub at Coatham.

Cllr Lynn Pallister, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at the Council, said: “We want as many people as possible to come along to this drop-in event to view the proposals. You’ll get first sight of the new CGI images and will be able to speak directly to the project team and designers involved in the process to answer any questions.

“This Town Deal investment will help restore pride in Redcar High Street, upgrading the look for the benefit of residents, visitors and our local business owners.”
