Redcar Athletic Under-23s cemented their place in the promotion places with a hard fought 3-2 win over local rivals Redcar CF.

With CF based at Redcar Rugby Club, this was the closest of derbies and the game got off to an explosive start.

Athletic nearly took the lead in the opening minute when Jack Williams (sponsored by Me Sign) saw his shot well saved by the CF keeper. Play switched to the other end and the away side took the lead in the 2nd minute when the unmarked striker headed home at the back post. On 6 minutes, Emrah Isik (sponsored by John Ibinson) kept the score at 1-0 with an excellent save.

With just 10 minutes on the clock, Athletic equalised when fine build up play from Marshall Blackburn and Jack Williams set up David Bradley who gave the keeper no chance with a fine finish from 15 yards. It was very nearly 2-1 just a minute later when Matty Bage drew a fine save from the CF keeper. Bage tried his luck again on 22 minutes but, again, the CF keeper made an excellent save.

Jack Williams, who was giving his full back a torrid time set up Tom Newton (sponsored by Nails by Caitlin) on the half hour mark but the striker volleyed over. Athletic were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes. David Bradley sent Tom Newton clear and the striker rounded the keeper but saw his shot handled on the edge of the 6 yard box, with the referee immediately pointing to the spot, also showing the CF centre back a yellow card. Tom Newton stepped up to take the spot kick and despite the keeper getting a hand to the ball, the ball found the back of the net.

Athletic started the second half well with half time sub Cam Thomson showing great skill to create a chance for himself, which the CF keeper saved well. Athletic made it 3-1 on 49 minutes when Marshall Blackburn fed Cam Thomson, who crossed to the unmarked Jack Williams, who drew a fantastic save from the CF keeper. However, David Bradley was on hand to slot home the rebound to give the home side some breathing space.

Just before the hour mark, a defence splitting pass saw the CF striker finish well to make it 3-2. Athletic nearly wrapped the game up with 17 minutes left when brilliant skill from David Bradley set up Kian Brodie (sponsored by Ells Bells Beauty), who drew another fine save by the CF keeper. The game got stretched as CF sought an equaliser, with Athletic having chances on the break but there were no further goals as Athletic secured a 2nd successive home win.
