Steelmen face off against Synthonia in enticing pre-season opener.

Redcar Athletic make their eagerly anticipated return to action, as a pre-season encounter with Billingham Synthonia offers the first real chance for vital minutes.

The Steelmen haven’t graced the field since leapfrogging Whickham into sixth place on the final day of last season, securing their highest finish in competitive football with a 2-0 victory.

The stellar finish came on the back of fine form under Gary Forster, which coupled with some potent recruitment, sets expectations high for the upcoming campaign.

Tonight offers the first glimpse of the new Redcar, and whilst fitness orientated, still presents an opportunity for new faces to impress, and gel with the current squad.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of our new campaign’s first act.

Formed in 1923, Billingham Synthonia are a club heaped in history, celebrating their centenary season this campaign.

Nicknamed ‘The Synners’, Billingham feature in the league below the Steelmen, the second division of the Ebac Northern League, where they finished 16th last season.

Their ambitions are clearly much higher for the coming campaign however, as a number of new faces have passed through the doors, including former Athletic man, Alex Bruton.

Still, Synthonia’s pre-season got off to a rocky start, as West Auckland left Stokesley as 6-1 victors on Saturday afternoon.

A date with the Synners kickstarted Redcar’s pre-season calendar last year too, with attacking duo Donny Holdsworth and Sonni Coleman handed their first starts.

The energetic central midfielder notched his first goal for the club, as the Steelmen fought from behind to open the season on a high.

Isaac Walker spear-headed the comeback, earning a brace after Billingham’s early double, with a further strike from Matt Crossen sealing the 4-2 triumph.

Tonight will be the first opportunity for the new additions to make their mark, whilst offering a number of new players the chance to impress, and earn a place in the squad.

Matty Tymon, Adam Wheatley, Joe Ferguson and Layton Watts will all make the trip, whilst Isaac Walker is unavailable due to holiday.

A number of new trialists will also make an appearance, in a bid to secure their spot for the new campaign.

Due to maintenance on the main pitch at Stokesley Sports Park, tonight’s match will take place on the back pitch.

This can be accessed via the back of the car park, rather than through the turnstiles as usual.

The bar will be open as normal.

The postcode for Stokesley Sports Complex is TS9 5NY, and we hope to see some of you there.
