A sweltering afternoon at Teesdale Park set the scene for Redcar Athletic’s third pre-season outing – a hefty defeat at the hands of a keen Thornaby side.

The Blues seized control of the tie with a quick double inside ten minutes. Ryan Wright and Charlie Twinn took the plaudits, before Oscar Fletcher fired back.

A second from Ryan Wright and a further strike from James Rowe put the game to bed before the break.

Not two days on from a hard-fought win over Middlesbrough’s youth, the Steelmen made the trip to Teesdale Park somewhat unprepared for Thornaby’s  enthusiasm.

Ryan Wright broke into the box to slot the hosts ahead inside five minutes, before a smart finish across goal from Charlie Twinn doubled the lead moments later.

Oscar Fletcher mirrored Twinn’s effort to weave a slim thread of hope for Redcar, but a blistering counter – and simple finish for James Rowe – made it short lived.

Redcar had three trialists on the field, including one between the sticks, who had his work cut out for him to keep the score respectable.

He made a diving stop towards the far stanchion as the break approached, using an outstretched leg to deny Charlie Twinn his second soon after.

It was an in-swinging corner which next unravelled the Steelmen. Ryan Wright met the delivery at the near post, sealing his brace with a well-placed header.

Changes injected some much-needed impetus when play resumed, but little came to fruition.

Overhit passes and poor control typified the final half hour. Chances for Oscar Fletcher, Adam Boyes and Joseph Bartliff came and went.

Mark Anderson cleared the crossbar from range, and Louis Johnson fired wide.

Thornaby had opportunities of their own to increase the deficit, but Redcar’s trialist between the sticks stood firm to keep to damage to a minimum.
