Match Report: Redcar Athletic 3-0 Richmond Town

A cup win that puts us through to the third round, but by no stretch of the imagination was it a simple one

The Steelmen enjoyed a comfortable win as they progressed to the third round of the CLS Sports Senior County Cup.

Bradley Fewster opened the scoring with a composed finish after a scramble in the box, John Howard would double the lead with a great free kick, and Mark Anderson got the third as he tapped home from a few yards out.

Despite what the scoreline suggested, Richmond really made the lads work for the win, with all three goals coming in the second half

The first 45 was a real struggle for Redcar, with Richmond just sitting back, seemingly content with going to penalties right from the off.

The main talking point of the first half was a controversial decision from the referee as he didn’t send off the Richmond keeper despite him taking out an oncoming Fewster.

Redcar would continue to apply pressure, with the whole half being played around the Richmond box, but it ultimately led to nothing, with several long range efforts being had, but the breakthrough never coming.

It was more of the same in the second half, but the first real chance fell to Richmond as they hit the post from a swift counter-attack.

Redcar finally made the breakthrough in the 71^st minute though, as the pressure was simply too much for Richmond to handle, and they failed to clear the ball, causing it to fall to Fewster, who was able to score with a simple finish.

The second came soon after, as in the 80^th minute John Howard was able to score an unstoppable free kick from the edge of the box as he curled it into the far corner.

The third came in the 90^th minute, as a blocked shot found its way through to Anderson who was able to poke it past the Richmond keeper, who despite showing great diving skills earlier on, failed to keep the ball out this time.

It was a good performance from the Steelmen, and we are now set to face Grangetown in the next round.

A special shoutout is also needed to the ground staff and everyone else who contributed in order to get this match ahead, as it’s been a tough period with this weather, but everyone at the club has worked tirelessly throughout this period.
