Match Report: Redcar Athletic 1-1 Blyth Town

So many matches at the Hollou, and so many goals too, and we end it with a draw to Blyth Town

Our last match at home saw us host the side we got promoted with, with Blyth Town fighting a battle at the other end of the table

Early on in the match, it was a tricky start for both sides as neither of us could create anything of real note.

Owen Burns would nearly create something great, as he pushed forward, though his pass to Louis Johnson was overhite and it resulted in a goal kick for Blyth

They would then go and take the lead as they would play a ball into the box, Rio May would skew his clearance to the feet of a Blyth Town attacker, and he would stab a shot high into the goal

The rest of the half saw a few chances, with Louis Johnson being taken down in the box, though the referee waved away what looked like a definite penalty

Brad Fewster would be forced off through an injury in the 37th minute, with Curtis Round taking his place, and the half would end with Blyth Town’s goalkeeper pulling off two great saves.

The first would see Rio May try and curl an effort into the top corner, with an outstretched glove tipping the attempt over

From the resulting corner, Danni Lay would be left unmarked, allowing him to get a powerful header on target, though it was again tipped out of play by the shot-stopper

Two strikes that both should have been goals, though neither went in, and it meant we entered the break a goal down

The second half saw us play with a lot more intent, as Bosh nearly got to a long ball that evaded a defender, though Blyth’s keeper rushed out to get there first.

Dane Burlce whipped in a great ball that frustratingly went past the Steelmen in the box, Bry Taylor attempted another long-range strike in what was becoming a trademark for the fullback, and we would win another corner.

This one, though, would see our luck change, as Mark Anderson would whip a ball in to the back post, it would be headed across goal by Danni Lay, and Kev Burgess would get his second league goal of the season as he would nod in a close-range effort to level the scores.

We would make a few more changes as the game began to reach the end, with Danny Rowe coming on for Adam Boyes, who would see his home goal tally be halted at 25

Oscar Fletcher would come on for Bryan Taylor, na dour last swap would see Sparky come off for Nathan Guru.

Amidst that final change, we did fashion some more chances, with Louis producing some solid dribbling to get in the box, before being tackled, with Blyth Town then winning a set piece.

Curtis Round would then whip a ball in that saw Danni Lay, playing as a makeshift striker, nearly turn in, much to the agony of the supporters who brought out the ever-loved “If Danni scores, we’re on the pitch” chant.

Part of me is genuinely curious if the pitch invasion would happen if Danni did get on the scoresheet.

The final bit of action in the match would see a free kick in a decent spot put wide, and the game would end as a draw.

A vital point for our opponents, and one that can be added to our ever-growing, record-breaking tally

We have one game left now, and it is an away trip to North Ferriby that will see us underline this season, and hopefully we can do it with a win.

See you there, and up the Steelmen
