Redcar Athletic crashed out of the Emirates FA Cup with a shock defeat to Pickering Town at a packed out Mill Lane.

The Steelmen took an early lead through Adam Boyes, but trailed just as quickly when George Brown netted a treble.

Bradley Fewster pulled one back from the penalty spot, as further strikes from Joe Wood and George Thewlis spelled a bitter end to the Wembley dream.

It was a gut-wrenching return to the dugout for Carl Jarrett on a still night in Pickering.

The boss marked his first game at the helm in two weeks with a lone change – Curtis Round missed out through injury, replaced by the returning JJ Bartliff.

Such a swap gave Mark Anderson the nod in attack. The midfielder played an inch-perfect ball to Adam Boyes in the opening moments, and the former Golden Ball winner dispatched with some ease.

Celebrations weren’t to last. A swift breakaway soon saw George Brown get the better of Josh Mazfari. An in-swinging corner gave the forward his well-deserved second.

Redcar had chances to restore parity. Mark Anderson fired straight at Alfie Burnett from close-range, whilst Boyes was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Jamie Thornton.

The restart offered no reprieve. Joe Wood prodded home at the back post from Nathan Dyer’s cross, as only a superb stop from Mazfari denied Brown a hat-trick.

Hope was sparked amongst the travelling Redcar faithful when JJ Bartliff was brought down in the area.

Bradley Fewster stepped up to finish, but a mirror incident at the other end saw George Brown finally clinch his treble from the spot.

Louis Johnson was denied when Alfie Burnett sprawled to punch his looping effort clear – bewilderingly given as a throwing to the Pikes – whilst Oscar Fletcher fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

Dane Burlace and Mark Anderson went close from dead balls, albeit failing to test Burnett, before George Thewlis added a fifth to condemn the Steelmen to a hefty Emirates FA Cup defeat.
