Find out more about the Priorymen and our latest Teesside derby.

Football is finally back on the Redcar seafront.

After three long weeks, the Steelmen open 2025 with a Teesside derby at the B&D Interiors Stadium, hosting our friends and foes from Guisborough Town

The two rivals have contested many an instant classic, and as such, we delved into our shared history and the origins of our intrepid opponents, the aptly-named Priorymen.

WHO ARE YA?

Guisborough Town

Celebrating a half-century of football in 2023, Guisborough Town are a club saturated in local heritage.

The Priorymen are four time champions of the North Riding Senior Cup, boasting one of the most prestigious records across the Teesside non-league scene.

The club have played at their home on Howlbeck Road since their inception in 1973, attracting 3’112 fans to the ground in a record attendance in 1979, as they sank Hungerford Town in the FA Vase semi-final.

Guisborough would go on to face heartbreak at Wembley, losing to Stamford, before North Ferriby United scuppered their dreams of a return to the hallowed turf 20 years later.

For the past 38 seasons, the Sunderland-inspired red and white stripes of the Priorymen have featured in the Northern League, with the club falling short of promotion to the Northern Premier League on a couple of occasions.

CURRENT FORM

In all honesty, there’s not much to take from this as a form guide, particularly given the word ‘current’.

Redcar Athletic haven’t kicked a ball competitively since defeat to Newcastle Benfield in December, our Teesside rivals only featuring the once since the turn of the year.

Admittedly, Guisborough Town’s attacking prowess was on show in a four-goal demolition of title-contenders Boro Rangers. Joe Pickett and Kurtis Howes both netted a brace in that game.

PREVIOUS HISTORY

There’s many a classic encounter between Redcar Athletic and Guisborough Town, but none more so than that from October 2022.

Devastated by the double blow of a red card (for Nathan Guru) and a goal (from Mackenzie Diccico), the Steelmen roared back in the second half thanks in no small part to an incredible performance from Isaac Walker.

The forward netted a ten-minute hat-trick to turn the tide of the match, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat for Steve Connolly’s (how ironic) side.

Guisborough Town’s last visit to the B&D Interiors Stadium was equally memorable, but not for the right reasons.

A red card for Anthony Bell (and a lack thereof for Nick Hood after a fracas) swung the tide of the match, and a late double snatched the spoils for the visitors.
