The Club Captain told of Redcar’s desire to bounce back from Emirates FA Cup disappointment.

Kevin Burgess echoed Carl Jarrett’s message from Saturday’s defeat, willing his teammates to offer a fitting response against well-fancied Shildon.

The Steelmen crashed out of the Emirates FA Cup in the Preliminary Round at the hands of Pontefract Collieries, tasked with upending one of the division’s favourites on their Northern League return.

Unfortunate to miss out on promotion last season, Shildon slipped to second in the face of a relentless Bishop Auckland, condemned to another season at Step Five by West Auckland Town in the playoffs.

Beaten by both Boro Rangers and Whickham in their opening five games of the campaign, Kevin Burgess conceded the Railwaymen would still prove tough opposition, expecting Chris Hughes’ men to be in the promotion fight come what may.

Carl Jarrett: Pontefract defeat was a ‘lesson’

The Redcar boss reacts to Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup defeat.

In this afternoon’s pre-match presser, Kevin said: “What I can say is the management team and the players are fully focused on our next game away at Shildon. It will be tough.”

“It’s the next challenge, and the next opportunity to grab another positive result in the league. Hopefully, another three points.”

“Saturday was a result we need to quickly move on from, and that’s all you can do after a defeat. You have to learn from it and move on.

“We have more than one leader in that changing room, it’s not just myself. That’s something the management team has been focused on building this year.

“We have a great bunch of honest, hardworking lads that will fight for each other in each and every game to try and bring success to this football club.”

Opening his account at Green Lane last Tuesday in a four-goal demolition of Whitley Bay, Kevin admitted he enjoyed the feeling of contributing to the Steelmen’s potent attack.

The defender scored twice in 16 appearances last season, already halfway to such tally in four games following his return from injury this summer.

“It’s always a great feeling to help the team out with a goal.” He said. “It’s something I have always managed to do at the clubs I have played for.”

“I put it down to the quality of players I’m playing with, and the great service we get from set plays.

“I would just be happy with winning every game, and getting those clean sheets. It’s what we as defenders take pride in the most, but if I can help the team with a goal, it’s an extra bonus!”
