We took a look at Easington Colliery in our latest instalment of ‘The Lowdown.’
A new face in Division One for the 2024/25 season, Easington Colliery are far from unfamiliar to those of a Redcar persuasion.
Welfare Park hosted the Steelmen’s Northern League debut back in 2018, the result of which I think we’ll keep quiet.

Set to lock horns tonight for the first time since a bitter Isuzu FA Vase defeat in 2021, we delved into the history of our County Durham counterparts, from their founding years, to recent playoff success.

WHO ARE YA?
Easington Colliery
One of the oldest clubs in the Northern League, Easington Colliery Welfare came to pass as early as 1913.
The Colliers began their journey in English football in the Wearside League, a division where the club spent most of their history, first winning the title in 1930.
Easington’s most successful years came in the aftermath of the Second World War, twice winning the league title, once the Monkwearmouth Cup in an impressive double, but most spectacularly reaching the First Round Proper of the Emirates FA Cup in 1955.
The club beat four Northern League sides to qualify, eventually exiting the competition at the hands of Tranmere Rovers in front of a 4’500 strong crowd at Welfare Park.

Easington Colliery Welfare – as it was then known – disbanded in 1964, reformed just nine years later, where the club eventually merged with Easington Rangers to form the Easington Colliery AFC that will visit Green Lane this evening.
The unified club fought through the Northern Football Alliance and the Wearside League to regain its Northern League status, finally clinching promotion back to the promised land in 2024.
CURRENT FORM

Hampered by a number of injuries in recent weeks, Easington Colliery come to Green Lane winless in four, pit against a Redcar side eyeing a sixth consecutive league win.
Still, the Collieries are far from a side to rule out, well-equipped to beat any opposition on their day, including the likes of Shildon, and Newcastle Blue Star.

Victory for Redcar Athletic this evening would cement a seven point cushion ahead of second-place Blyth Town, an ever-so important buffer with the Isuzu FA Vase to come next weekend.
REDCAR ATHLETIC 3-1 NEWCASTLE BLUE STAR
Callum Guy netted the decisive goal in our last outing at Green Lane.
