The assistant boss lauds a fantastic performance from the Steelmen.
Dave McTiernan praised Redcar Athletic for a mature performance under the lights in Cumbria, as much for a controlled second half as a blistering first.
He argued it was to the players’ credit to rack up a five goal lead come the break of play – three of which from a clinical Adam Boyes – pleased too with the way in which the game was managed to a reserved end.
Capitalising on defensive frailties in the opening quarter of an hour, Callum Guy and Adam Boyes twice combined to stun Carlisle City with a lightening quick double.
Jack Blackford’s quick feet teed up Bradley Fewster to make it three, Adam Boyes back to his clinical best with two composed finishes to claim the match ball.
Carlisle City 0-5 Redcar Athletic
A hat-trick from Adam Boyes headlined a five-star showing in Cumbria.
Goals aren’t all that win games, and as impressed as Dave McTiernan was with such offensive prowess, the assistant boss was equally delighted to see the level of control in a measured second half showing.
“I think it’s a credit to the lads first and foremost.” He said.
“The motivation in the changing room, coming from Saturday, they’ve just carried it on.
“All we’ve asked all season is for the lads to show their capabilities, what we’ve got within the squad.
“We’re blessed with loads of attacking options, but tonight wasn’t even about that, it was about the control.
“Our decision making was excellent, and some of those goals were just different class. Credit to the boys.”
A five goal lead at the half, and with a busy calendar past and present, Dave argued there was little need for the Steelmen to over-exert themselves.
Instead, he praised decision making and possession-based football, with Redcar possibly to account for upwards of 70% of the play, even with little more to show for it.
“Going in at 5-0, for me, it’s then about controlling the game.” Dave said. “You’ve got to make sure you keep the ball, you do the right things, decision making is good.”
“You can’t afford to get sloppy.
“Like I’ve said, we didn’t need to score more goals. We controlled the game. It was a mature second half performance from us.
“Me, Carl and the coaching staff are delighted.”
