The Sky Blues: The Lowdown on Carlisle City

We took a look at Carlisle City in our latest instalment of ‘The Lowdown.’

Redcar Athletic’s Northern League campaign continues under the lights in Cumbria, boss Carl Jarrett labelling Carlisle City’s Gillford Park a difficult place to go and win.

WHO ARE YA?

Carlisle City

Nicknamed ‘The Sky Blues,’ Carlisle City were formed in 1975 by former Carlisle United players George Walker and Ron Thompson, driven by providing a place for the ‘local lads’ to play.

Initially members of the Northern Football Alliance, City left to join the Northern Combination in 1987, after finishing bottom of the league in the 1986–87 season.

However, at the end of the following season – 1987–88 – the Combination merged into the Northern Alliance, with Carlisle rejoining to become one of the founding members of the new Division One.

In terms of honours, Carlisle City were crowned Northern Alliance Division One champions in 1991-92, and most recently gained promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One after clinching the Division Two title in 2021-22.

CURRENT FORM

Defeats are scarce in both clubs’ recent repertoire, Carlisle unbeaten in five, and Redcar in six.

The Sky Blues boast two stalemates on home turf, most recently – and impressively – a 1-1 draw with promotion chasing West Auckland Town, James Harrison and Keighran Kerr on the scoresheet.

Carlisle also missed a penalty.

For Redcar, victory over title-rivals Boro Rangers sealed a move back to top spot at the weekend, victory this evening paramount to retain the position.
