The boss offered his thoughts on our latest defeat at Darlington Road.
Carl Jarrett put Redcar Athletic’s latest defeat at Darlington Road down to what he called a disappointing lack of desire.
The boss argued his side were ‘outfought’ by West Auckland Town, admitting that whilst the dismissal of Danni Lay was frustrating, it had no impact on the outcome of the match.
A ground with little good fortune for Redcar Athletic, former Steelman Layton Watts put the home side ahead on the stroke of halftime.
Danni Lay was given his marching orders after an unfortunate, poorly managed altercation, before Layton completed his brace with a stoppage time breakaway.
On a second successive league defeat for Redcar, Carl Jarrett blasted his players for a lack of fight, arguing they were far from their high expectations.
West Auckland Town 2-0 Redcar Athletic
The report from our latest defeat at Darlington Road.
“Nowhere near.” He said. “That was nowhere near what we want.”
“West outfought us tonight. I just thought their decisions were better in key areas. Layton (Watts) scored a great goal in the first half.
“I just think we were all over the place tonight. We just didn’t look anywhere near what I know we can be. We gave the ball away too many times. We had no fight in us.
“You can be the best footballers in the league, but if you don’t have those minerals where you can fight and scrap for everything, every ball, like they have tonight, then you’re sometimes going to come unstuck.”
A major talking point of the evening, Danni Lay’s dismissal was Redcar’s first of the season – a second yellow card given after a short tussle.
Like many, the boss was frustrated with how the incident played out, arguing quicker action from the match officials would have forgone to altercation altogether.
“Obviously, we’re disappointed that Danni has been sent off for a second yellow.” Jarrett said. “He’s just tried to get the ball back, and it’s just one of those things.”
“Their lad is rolling around with the ball on the floor, and the referee should’ve stopped the game. If he was going to book anyone, he should’ve booked their lad.
“Danni’s gone over to take the ball off him, and because they’ve both rolled on the floor, he’s sent him off. I can’t really say much, as we can’t really talk about the referees.
“I didn’t think it was a dirty game, but I thought there could’ve been a red card in the first half to be honest, for them.” Said of Gary Brown’s poor challenge on Callum Guy.
“But, like I’ve said, the red card and the bookings didn’t lose us the game.” He continued. “We lost it because of us.”
“It is what it is, and we have to move on to Saturday.”
