Match Report: Redcar Athletic Under-23s 7-0 Riverside

Redcar Athletic Under23s lifted themselves into third place in the table with a comprehensive win against the side bottom of the table, Riverside.

In truth, the margin of victory could have been much greater, had it not been for a man of the match performance by the Riverside ‘keeper.

The tone of the game was set in the opening minutes when Sam Barnard tried his luck from 25 yards out but the ‘keeper tipped the ball over the bar.

It was 1-0 on five minutes when Jack Marshall played a delightful through ball to David Bradley, who timed his run to perfection to stay onside and beat the ‘keeper with an excellent finish.

The Riverside ‘keeper then made a good save from recent signing Jack Charlton, before centre back Marshall Blackburn drew another stop with a header from a corner.

Athletic continued to dominate with Matty Rutland setting up Ashton Dick, but the Riverside ‘keeper made an excellent save.

Jack Charlton then had two chances in quick succession to make it 2-0 but shot narrowly wide on both occasions.

It was 2-0 on 23 minutes when David Bradley teed up Jack Charlton, who couldn’t miss from a yard out.

Ashton Dick did brilliantly to set up David Bradley, but the striker’s effort was well saved by the Riverside ‘keeper.

It was 3-0 on 28 minutes when David Bradley could have shot but instead set up Ashton Dick who smashed the ball home.

It was nearly four just after the half hour mark when Jamie Skelton set up Jack Charlton, who saw his shot hit the outside of the post.

On 33 minutes, another well timed run from David Bradley saw him one on one with the ‘keeper, who made another tremendous save.

It was 4-0 five minutes before half time when Ashton Dick did superbly to put it on a plate for Jack Charlton, who couldn’t miss from close range.

On the stroke of half time, a 35 yard thunderbolt from Jack Marshall crashed off the angle of post and bar with the ‘keeper rooted to the spot.

After a quiet start to the second half, Athletic stepped up a gear. First the Riverside ‘keeper made yet another good save, this time from Jack Charlton. From the ensuing corner, Matty Bethell saw his shot well blocked, before Jack Charlton put the rebound over the bar.

It was 5-0 on the hour mark when Jacob Spence and Ashton Dick combined to set up David Bradley, who finished well.

A minute later it was six, with the goal of the game from Ashton Dick, who curled a shot over the ‘keeper from 20 yards out.

On 63 minutes, it was 7-0 when Jamie Skelton was fouled in the area and he stepped up to slot home the penalty, sending the ‘keeper the wrong way.

Athletic dominated the rest of the game but a combination of more good goalkeeping and wayward finishing meant it stayed 7-0.
