The Redcar boss offered his take on Redcar’s third 4-0 win of the season.

Carl Jarrett conceded the Steelmen weren’t at their best despite a four-goal victory over the ten men of Whitley Bay.

The boss labelled the Northumberland outfit ‘a good footballing team,’ admitting the match could have played out differently ‘on another night.’

Goalless when Whitley Bay captain Mikel Thompson walked for a dangerous lunge, a change in formation gave Redcar the advantage, Kevin Burgess nodding home seconds before the break.

Curtis Round repeated the feat to add a much needed insurance goal, before a loose stop from Dan Gladstone was punished by Adam Boyes.

Substitute Cam Thomson stole the headlines, striking an early shout for goal of the season to wrap up a third four-goal victory on the comfort of the Redcar seafront.

A convincing victory nonetheless, Carl Jarrett proclaimed his players were far from their best, arguing the initial formation played a role in restricting their expression.

“I don’t think we were at our best tonight.” He said. “I think there was a lot to still do at half time, even though they (Whitley Bay) went down to ten men.”

“We made a couple of changes tactically in the second half, which helped us.

“I didn’t think we got the ball out wide enough whilst playing with our wingbacks, so we decided to change it around.

“We went back to that 4-3-3 system that we’ve been playing a lot, and it worked for us.

“I thought our two wide men were excellent. Especially Jack, his movement was fantastic. He’s on fire at the present minute that kid.

“We’ve got a great bunch of lads in there, they’re all working hard for each other. They all understand what we’re trying to do.”

On the endeavour of Whitley Bay, Jarrett added: “Take nothing away from Whitley, they’re a good team. A good footballing team.”

“When you go down to ten men, it’s always hard. It either goes one way or the other.

“On another night, in the first half, you look at those chances that we’ve missed.

“I think that was more me just getting frustrated at half time, with us not putting the ball in the back of the net. That’s what we’ve been good at of late.

“Like I said, I can’t sit here as the gaffer, 4-0 victory, still top of the league, and whinge.

“That’s what we’re here for, at the end of the day, to go on and win games.”
