The curtain was drawn on a memorable campaign for Redcar Athletic this week, with their 2-0 win over Whickham meaning their final stop is sixth place in the Northern League Division One.

It’s lofty heights for the Steelmen in only their second season at the level following promotion in 2020/21. They had reached their record 50 points tally last month following a Derby Day victory over Guisborough Town on Non League Day.

A season that came full circle, starting at Green Lane and ending at Green Lane, enjoying and enduring highs and lows.

The team sheet saw many names come and go, as did the turnstile, leaving with an average attendance of 302 – the highest of which was seen in the recent 4-3 victory over West Auckland Town, with 550 fans in attendance.

The Club said goodbye to longstanding manager Steve Connolly – whom this very article about the successes of Redcar Athletic could never be written without; plus his fantastic staff that served both he and the Steelmen with the utmost endeavour.

With change come new faces, and the Club also welcomed new coaching staff with the promotion of Gary Forster as Steve Connolly’s successor – initially on an interim basis before good form was rewarded with a contract until 2024.

New ownership and new directions have been embraced to make impactful change in the local area.

There have been challenges and campaigns for better in Redcar and East Cleveland, culminating in overwhelming acts of kindness with Food Bank donations being received en masse at several home games this season.

Highlights off the pitch include the aforementioned 1-0 victory over local rivals Guisborough – part of a league double having seen a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture –  a resounding 9-2 win against Thornaby on Boxing Day, and defeating Seaham Red Star (finally!) in a dogged performance away from home when a win felt needed the most.

Then there’s the countless goals scored by players past and present: Donny, Sonni, Danny and, well, we can’t forget Isaac.

Sixth place is a fantastic finish, but it feels like just the start for the Steelmen.
