Redcar Under-23s reached the semi-final of the WoodSmith Construction North Riding Sunday Challenge Cup today with a 3-1 win against St Mary’s Sunday team.

The start of the game saw both teams play some decent football but it was Redcar took the lead on 15 minutes when a pinpoint corner from Tom Lane was neatly finished by centre back Kieran Sutherland. It was 2-0 on 21 minutes when Jack Marshall teed up Tom Newton who made no mistake from 12 yards.

St Mary’s looked dangerous going forward but the 3 centre backs of Sutherland, Matty Rutland (sponsored by Steven Morrison) and Marshall Blackburn snuffed out most attacks though keeper Emrah Isik (sponsored by John Ibinson) made one tremendous one handed save from the St Mary’s number 11. Going forward, attacking wing backs Lane and Jack Williams (sponsored by MeSign) were a constant threat to the St Mary’s defence and the central midfield pairing of Matty Bage and Sam Barnard kept play moving forward at every opportunity.

The second half saw St Mary’s dominate possession but their finishing was wayward and, when called upon, Emrah Isik was able to make some crucial saves. Redcar made the game safe on 86 minutes when Under 18 players Jacob Spence strode forward from his right wing back position and crossed to Tom Lane, who neatly finished across the St Mary’s keeper. St Mary’s scored an injury time consolation that their overall play deserved but it was Redcar who secured the win and moved into the semi finals.

Man of the Match was centre back Matty Rutland, sponsored by Steven Morrison.
