Carl Jarrett offered his thoughts on a 2-0 win at Sam Smith’s Park.
It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t resounding, but three points is three points for Redcar boss Carl Jarrett.
A final venture across the north east for Redcar Athletic, goals from captain Kevin Burgess and the clinical Adam Boyes sank a rather spirited Newcastle Benfield.
The skipper prodded home into an unmarked goal to see the Steelmen in ahead at the break, Boyes on hand in stoppage time to beat Andrew Grainger with a tidy lob.
REPORT: Benfield 0-2 Steelmen
Forever pleased to have another win on the board, Carl Jarrett admitted such was the most important takeaway.
“The lads are chuffed that we got those three points today.” The boss said.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about winning, isn’t it. We’ve got the three points today, and I can’t really say anymore.”
Far from a pretty affair, one facet in a poor afternoon’s football was a rather heavy pitch, which made Redcar’s style of play somewhat of a challenge.
“They were very difficult conditions to be fair.” Jarrett said. “It was very hard.”
“The pitch was very lively, and bouncy. It looks good from out here, but when you’re on it, it’s very bouncy.
“Our lads found it hard to get the ball under control.”
Despite the result, and the field of play, Carl Jarrett conceded his side were far from the high standards both the squad and the management have set.
He added: “I still think we weren’t at our best.”
“I think our decision making was poor, and our final pass was just either too short or too long.
“We still missed a bag full of chances again. Two in the first half that I thought we should be scoring. In the second half we had a few chances too.
“Newcastle Benfield made it difficult for us. They’ve got a lot of young legs, some good energy.
“People will look at that and say it’s just two teams with nothing to play for, but as I said to the lads before the game, you have.
“You’ve got your own personal pride, as well as the team. You’ve got to stick in right to the very end.”
