Whitley Bay are the visitors to Green Lane, as the Steelmen look to build on last weekend's Izusu FA Vase triumph.

A fourth consecutive home clash in the Northern League, and Redcar Athletic are in dire need of a positive result to spark a charge up the table.

Fortunately – for the first time this season – Gary Forster’s squad will have something to build on, after an emphatic triumph in monsoon conditions at Esh Winning last weekend.

With that elusive first win under the belt – and a date with Padiham in the second qualifying round of the Isuzu FA Vase – attention turns back to the league, and in particular, mounting a climb towards the top half.

This afternoon’s opponents certainly won’t look to make that easy, coming to the Redcar seafront in third place, despite a few rocky performances in the past few weeks.

The seaside outfit will also have revenge in mind, after the Steelmen tore their defense to shreds at Green Lane earlier in the calendar year.

Here’s the lowdown on this afternoon’s eye-watering Northern League encounter…

Who are you isn’t a question that realistically needs to be asked about Whitley Bay, as the club boast an impressive history, filled with silverware, national recognition, and cup success.

The club was formed in 1950 as Whitley Bay Athletic, with the latter part of the name dropped eight years later, after winning the Northern Football Alliance, and the Northumberland Senior Cup.

Whitley rose to prominence in the FA Amateur Cup, securing their place as a top non-league side with consistent quarter-final appearances.

In 2002, the club claimed their first national success, winning the FA Vase by a goal-to-nil at Villa Park.

The Bay continued their affinity with the prestigious competition, claiming a hat-trick of titles in 2011 with a 3-2 victory over Coalville Town, having beaten Wroxham and Glossop North End in the two years previous.

Since their historic treble, the club have seen little success, with last season’s fourth place league finish their best in a number of years.

A fond afternoon from an Athletic persuasion, the two clubs’ last meeting proved a thrilling affair.

Under the bitterly cold winter sun, Redcar ran out 4-0 victors over the title-contenders, damaging their dreams of a Northern Premier League return.

Donny Holdsworth ignited the rout with an early brace, stunning the Bay with a controversial quick free-kick, which caused an uproar.

Club captain Anthony Bell struck goal number three, driving the ball into the bottom corner from distance, after a fine lay-off from Craig Hutchinson.

A second half penalty provided the opportunity to wrap the match up, and substitute Sonni Coleman obliged, beating the visiting shot-stopper with a precise and composed spot kick straight down the centre.

The Steelmen fared less fortunately in the earlier fixture between the two, as Whitley Bay claimed all three points in a feisty affair Hillheads Park.

Isaac Walker broke the deadlock, but Whitley Bay simply proved too organised, sweeping Redcar aside with an opportunistic treble.

For the first time this season, Redcar come into a match with something to build from.

Last weekend, the Isuzu FA Vase took centre stage, as the Steelmen finally turned the tide on their early woes with a 6-3 victory amidst heavy rain.

Star forward Isaac Walker stole the headlines, notching a hat-trick, and providing twice for the team, as Redcar hit six on the road.

In contrast, Whitley faced an imperious Bishop Auckland in the league, and were left feeling humiliated.

The league-leaders put five passed the Bay, compounding their misery of a home FA Cup defeat just a few days earlier.

Since, Whitley have rewritten their fortunes, sinking Tow Law Town on the road midweek.

Signed, registered and raring to go, Liam Jarvie will make his Redcar Athletic debut this afternoon, in front of a home crowd.

The forward will most likely join hat-trick hero Isaac Walker in a star-studded attack for the Steelmen, which Gary Forster will hope could spell a first three points in the new campaign.

At the back, Liam O’Sullivan returns to the squad, with the left-back position up for grabs between himself, and Joe Thompson.

Jack Norton is likely to start between the sticks, having served his suspension, whilst Nathan Fisher returns to his parent club, and Decklan Greenwood is sidelined with a knock.
