The Redcar boss offered his take on a rather uninspiring afternoon at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium.

Redcar Athletic Manager Carl Jarrett gave a fair reflection on Saturday’s derby day action, pleased to salvage a point, but disappointed to have to.

The boss argued his players looked ‘tired’ and sluggish, needing a James Frazer goal from the hosts to wake up in the dying embers of play.

Six games in just three weeks in what’s come of a busy August, Redcar Athletic’s efforts in a Dean Street thriller seemingly came back with a vengeance.

The Steelmen struggled to find the fluent football fans have come to expect ahead of the hour, Oscar Fletcher eventually eking out a satisfying equaliser with quick feet and a tidy finish.

Guisborough Town 1-1 Redcar Athletic

Our report as the spoils are shared on derby day.

Dropping points for the first time in the Northern League this season – and thus pipped for top stop – Carl Jarrett admitted his players were far from their best, happy to come away with a share of the spoils all things considered.

“I’ll be quite honest, I don’t think we were the better team.” He said. “We look a very, very, very tired group at the present minute.”

“We’re obviously lacking squad members through injury. I’m not able to make changes, not able to look at the bench and to bring some energy on. We’ve got some lads that are really ran of their feet.

“These are no excuses, but if you’re asking the question, is it one we were disappointed with, then we always want to go out and win games. That’s what we’re here for.

“When you’re getting beat with about ten minutes to go, and you get it back to 1-1 like we did, you take a point off your local rivals and you’re still unbeaten in the league, I’ve got to be happy tonight.”

FIXTURES AND RESULTS

Often worried less about the result than the performance, Carl Jarrett stressed a late equaliser wouldn’t hide a poor afternoon at the office.

Until James Frazer opened the scoring for Guisborough Town, Redcar had failed to muster a shot on target, amassing just three over the course over almost 100 minutes of football.

“Did I think the performance was good?” He retorted. “No. It was very under par from Redcar Athletic.”

“We just didn’t look like we had any creativity. We didn’t keep the ball well enough, and we were very long and direct in our play.

“Is that down to personal missing? We look at the creativity in midfield where we’ve got four or five key players injured at the present minute.

“Did I think they were excellent, Guisborough? No. I just thought it was one of those 50-50 games.

“I didn’t think it was a great game to watch, unlike the Shildon game. I think we just looked a very, very tired bunch.

“I’m happy to come away with the draw, because I didn’t think we were anywhere near ourselves today. I thought we let ourselves down.”
