The thoughts of the Redcar boss on our derby with Guisborough Town.

Carl Jarrett says Guisborough Town will prove a tough ask for the Steelmen on their return to action after three weeks on the sidelines.

Redcar Athletic last kicked a ball competitively in a defeat to Newcastle Benfield in December, drawing the curtains on a fantastic year for the club with somewhat of a whimper.

On Saturday afternoon, such disappointment is cast into the rear view mirror, as Guisborough Town come to the Redcar seafront to open 2025 with a Teesside derby.

The Steelmen were scheduled to begin the new year against Marske United here at the B&D Interiors Stadium, but much like the two games afterwards, sub-zero temperatures got the better of the playing surface.

With no rain, frost or otherwise adverse weather forecast, Saturday’s derby is almost certain to go ahead, and that most definitely proved pleasing to Carl Jarrett.

“First and foremost, it’ll be great to get the lads back and playing football again.” He said.

“We’ve been off for the past few weeks due to the weather, which can’t be helped, but there’s nothing better than playing games of football.

“You can train all day long, but it’s always great to get the lads back together on a game day. Especially on a Saturday, back down at Green Lane, against a local rival in Guisborough Town.”

At opposite ends of the table when the two sides met at the Kevin Edward KGV Stadium in September, a win for the Priorymen on Saturday would take them beyond Redcar, albeit having played a game more.

The boss admitted Guisborough were not to be underestimated, offering high praise to former Steelmen boss, Steve Connolly, for his role in their success.

“Guisborough are playing very, very well at the minute under Steve (Connolly).” He said.

“It’ll be a difficult game for us. They’ve climbed the table and are now just below the playoff spots. They’ll be looking to climb into them I would have thought.

“We’ve got to be on it. We’ve got to be confident and stick together. It’s important that we get back to what we were doing best earlier on in the season.

“We’ve got a full squad at the present minute, and we look in good shape.

“Fingers crossed, we can have a good crowd there, put on a good display, and get back to winning ways.”
