Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves vs Redcar Athletic

Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 0-7 Redcar Athletic

Steelmen: James Sayer (10’), Jamie Owens (25’), Trialist (37’), Own Goal (38’), Sonni Coleman (69’), Layton Watts (76’), Matty Tymon (87’)

Redcar Athletic wrapped up their Moor Farm training camp with an emphatic victory over a young Stocksbridge side.

James Sayer’s clever back heel ignited the seven-goal rout, with further strikes from Jamie Owens, a trialist, and a Stocksbridge defender adding to the first half tally.

Oscar Fletcher drove the offence after the restart, teeing up Sonni Coleman and Layton Watts, before Matty Tymon’s delicate finish put the icing on the cake of another successful pre-season outing.

Despite failing to muster much of a threat to the Steelmen’s backline, the Steels’ forced the first save of the afternoon, which young shot-stopper Matty Pattison was more than equal to.

Redcar’s response proved both instant and spectacular, as James Sayer’s improvised back heel turned home a Joe Thompson long throw, just 10 minutes in.

A fantastic solo drive from Mason McNeill came close to providing a quick second, with the wing-back’s resulting effort knocked behind for a corner.

It was Danny Boyle who eventually fashioned Athletic’s second, lifting the ball into a dangerous area, where Jamie Owens took control, and finished with a sweet volley.

The third goal, and possibly the best of the afternoon, came through a trialist, whose winding run was topped off with a delightful dinked finish with eight minutes to spare in the half.

Joe Thompson’s deliveries proved the Steelmen’s most dangerous avenue in the contest, and finally came to fruition as the break loomed, when an onrushing defender glanced passed his own ‘keeper.

The introduction of Matty Tymon almost brought about an early fifth after the restart, as his towering header struck the woodwork at the back post.

Sonni Coleman enjoyed a number of opportunities alongside Tymon, but struggled to find a finish to match his excellent performance.

It took an incisive ball from Oscar Fletcher to end Coleman’s frustrations, as his simple strike across goal nestled in the far bottom corner.

The young England midfielder stepped up again to create Redcar’s sixth, spraying the ball out to Layton Watts on the wing, who darted inside and slotted home his deserved goal.

Stocksbridge finally found joy in attack as the match entered its dying moments, but even with numbers over, the young forward line failed to surpass the composure of Matty Pattison.

From one Matty to another, a driving run from Layton Watts left the ball on a plate for Tymon, who stuck out a leg to prod the ball home, and seal a routine, but spectacular, pre-season victory.
