Layton Watts battles with Aaron Haswell.

Northern Premier League outfit Whitby Town edged out the Steelmen in an exciting return to Green Lane.

An early goal apiece established parity at the break, before a simple finish from Connor Simpson earned Whitby the advantage.

James Sayer’s delicate lob put the home side back on level terms, but a late strike from Jos Storr sealed a first pre-season defeat for Redcar Athletic.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for the Redcar faithful, as Gary Forster’s men matched a side two divisions above across 90 minutes of football.

The Steelmen arguably dominated the early proceedings, and seized the perfect start through Matty Tymon.

The forward ghosted in at the far post to nod home his first for the club, after Adam Wheatley’s tidy flick on from Watts’ in-swinging corner left the defence rooted.

Whitby reacted quickly to level the affair some minutes later, as Jerome Greaves through ball slipped Bradley Fewster in behind, and the forward tucked his effort away at the second time of asking.

Joe Thompson missed a gilt-edged opportunity to restore Redcar’s lead, taking Layton Watts’ switch of play in his stride, before sliding his effort wide of Shane Bland’s goal.

Watts proved instrumental in all of Athletic’s successes on the evening, and almost left the field with an early goal of the season contender, with both his back heel flick and scissor kick missing the mark.

Both number one’s were involved in the action as the half dwindled out; Jack Norton dived in to deny Junior Mondal, and then Aaron Haswell, before Shane Bland dropped low to block a driven effort from Danny Boyle.

Whitby had grown into the contest as the first half droned on, and made their momentum count ten minutes after the restart, as Connor Simpson blasted the ball passed Norton to claim the lead.

Luck appeared to be against the Steelmen in their endeavour to find an equaliser, as twice the post came to Town’s aid.

A Matty Tymon volley was the first to be thwarted by the upright, his lofted effort from range reverberating the left post, before James Sayer’s fizzed effort struck its right-sided counterpart.

The young midfielder proved more fortunate with his next attempt, as his curled lob caught out Whitby’s freshly substituted shot-stopper, and nestled in the far top corner to restore parity.

It was Redcar’s turn to switch their goalkeeper next, as young Matty Pattison took his place between the sticks, diverting Jos Storr’s effort around the post minutes after his introduction.

The Northern Premier League outfit garnered a tighter control on the match as it neared its final stages, and as Junior Mondal pulled the ball back into the area, Storr wasn’t to be denied again, prodding the ball home to seal victory for the away side.
