Redcar Athletic vs Sunderland RCA

Redcar were left to rue missed chances as Sunderland RCA left Green Lane with all three points.

A quick double on the brink of half time left the visitors with a firm grip on the contest, before a scrappy third goal on the hour mark all but sealed the defeat.

Donny Holdsworth struck late on in a period of resurgence for the Steelmen, but golden opportunities had already gone amiss, and the deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Steve Connolly handed out debuts to two new signings, with experienced shot-stopper Jack Norton starting in between the sticks, whilst Nathan Guru featured alongside Ben Dale in the heart of the defence.

After a quiet opening quarter of an hour, Redcar had the contests first clear effort at goal, with Paul Young seeing a huge chance go astray as he lashed an effort over the bar from the centre of the area.

Having missed a golden opportunity to take an early lead, Jack Norton was called upon to make his first stop in red and blue, getting down well to deny Kyle Fryatt after the forward was played through on goal by early substitute Andre Bennett.

Chances proved at a premium throughout the first period, with Walker’s wayward header at the back post the Steelmen’s only other sight at goal, falling just before the half hour mark.

Despite having no more than a glimpse at goal in the opening 40 minutes, Sunderland found themselves 2 goals to the good at the break. Patton fired home the first, beating Norton from distance, before Annang-Colquhoun doubled the deficit, slotting home after a pullback cross.

Athletic came out much brighter after the interval, with Walker testing RCA shot-stopper Keaton Marrs from the left flank, before Young’s attempt from range travelled over the crossbar.

Isaac Walker came agonisingly close to pulling a goal back in the 56th minute, playing a lovely one-two with half time substitute Donny Holdsworth, before seeing his close-range effort blocked by the outstretched leg of Marrs.

With an hour played, matters got worse for the Steelmen, as Morris tucked the ball into the back of the net after a spectacular initial block at point-blanc range from Norton.

Redcar were given a glimmer of hope in the 77th minute, Donny Holdsworth plucking the ball out of the air with his chest, before powering a volley passed Marrs to pull a goal back.

Another huge chance at goal went a-begging for Athletic in the closing 10 minutes, with Walker placing his effort from inside the area over Marrs’ crossbar after Holdworth’s clever through ball.

The Steelmen had one last opportunity to reduce the arrears, the Sunderland keeper making a fantastic sprawling save to keep out Clarkson’s curling effort, sealing Steve Connolly’s side their first home defeat in the Northern League this season.

Attendance: 215.

Redcar Goal Scorers: Brandon Holdsworth (78).
