Redcar Athletic vs Boro Rangers

Redcar Athletic 1-2 Boro Rangers

Steelmen: Curtis Round (41’)

Rangers: Danny Lofts (48’), Stuart Rose (83’)

The ten men of Redcar Athletic were controversially beaten by Boro Rangers, as Stuart Rose avoided red to glance home the winning goal.

Level with a full cohort – Danny Lofts’s headed effort cancelling out Curtis Round’s first half opener – Joe Ferguson’s dismissal tipped the balance of power in favour of the visitors.

Stuart Rose tucked home the decisive goal seven minutes from time, one of a pair of Rangers’ stars lucky to remain on the field of play given other refereeing decisions.

Whilst notoriously physical and quick to leave their mark, Rose’s fifth minute challenge on Brad Mills was far beyond fair.

The forward’s raised boot collided solely with the shin of the fullback, who writhed in pain on the floor as a yellow card was brandished as punishment for the offence.

Back to his feet to help defend a tirade of Rangers’ pressure, Mills rose to turn Owen Burns’ seeking cross away and to safety, Stuart Rose dragging well wide in the aftermath.

Burns forced a match-first save from Callum Roberts some minutes later, the shot-stopper seeing Lucas Casson’s effort over the bar in his only other piece of first half action.

Anthony Bell soon worked Roberts’ opposite number, unleashing a stern drive from the middle of the park which Danny Horner was more than equal to.

A moment of magic from substitute Jack Harrison finally unlocked the Rangers’ defence, a splitting pass fizzed into the feet of Curtis Round, who obliged with the neat finish to match.

Much like in last month’s humiliating cup defeat, an early second half strike soon changed the complexion of the affair.

Danny Lofts climbed the highest in the box to head –‘s cross back across goal, his looping effort too high for a sprawling Callum Roberts to recover.

James Field was the next to make a particularly horrendous challenge, reducing Jack Blackford to a heap on the floor with a late lunge to win possession. Again, a yellow card was shown.

Rather predictably, as tensions began to boil over at Rangers’ aggression, Joe Ferguson slid over the ball after a strong challenge, the midfielder shown a red card for his troubles, much to Redcar’s frustration.

Ever so fortunate to be at a man advantage, Boro amassed a siege on Callum Roberts’ goal, two wayward efforts from Owen Clarkson the most notable.

Finally, Redcar were given one last thing to moan about. Stuart Rose – a man lucky to escape a red card of his own – ghosted behind the defensive line, and turned home the winning goal.
