Recap

Redcar Athletic moved six points clear at the top of the Northern League with a comfortable victory over Northallerton Town at the B&D Interiors Stadium.

Curtis Round fired the Steelmen in front with just three minutes on the clock; Craig Gott soon converted from the penalty spot to stave off building pressure.

Redcar were far more energetic when play resumed, and Oscar Fletcher finished off a fantastic team move to put the seal on seventh successive home win.

A bitter Friday evening on the Redcar seafront, early pressure from the Steelmen paid dividends with what no doubt proved a game-defining goal.

No sooner had the referee put his whistle to his lips than Bryan Taylor’s low cross was tipped into the path of Curtis Round by Adam Boyes, and the in-form forward made no mistake with a well-placed volley.

Redcar saw less of the ball than their travelling counterparts as the half dragged on, yet arguably produced the better chances.

Bryan Taylor enjoyed another stand-out performance down the left flank, again causing problems for Northallerton with a low delivery prodded wide by Adam Boyes.

Oscar Fletcher’s looping cross was guided into the grasp of Callum Dobson by Curtis Round, the Northallerton shot-stopper forced into a pair of further stops to deny Boyes from close range.

A heavily disputed trip on Oscar Fletcher soon offered a cushion from the penalty spot. Craig Gott stepped up to the mark with confidence, and left Dobson rooted to the spot with a smart finish.

Nathan Stephenson found himself privy to a sighter from a dead ball as the half ebbed away, failing to test Josh Mazfari from the edge of the area.

It was Mark Anderson whose effort saw in a much more energetic second period. The midfielder twisted and turned to get his shot off, but caused no trouble for Callum Dobson.

Adam Boyes again tried to add to his own tally from a through ball, denied once more by an outstretched leg, with the ball thumped to safety.

Redcar’s dominance finally paid off with little under ten minutes to go in the contest, as Fewster and Anderson both let Nathan Guru’s infield pass find Oscar Fletcher.

The midfielder took his time to weave out of a tight spot, picking out the bottom left corner to put the contest well and truly beyond all doubt.

There was still chance for one last cheer, as Kevin Burgess made his way into the field for the first time since October, leaving Joe Taylor the only man on the sidelines with five games to go.
