Pickering Town vs Redcar Athletic

Donny’s double on his Pickering return spearheaded the Steelmen’s maiden clean sheet victory of the season.

A first half brace from the in-form number ten fired Redcar to a second win on the bounce, with a headed third from Sonni Coleman wrapping up a dominant performance for a revitalised side.

Steelmen boss Steve Connolly made a lone change to the team which dismantled Crook Town, bringing hat-trick hero Isaac Walker back into the starting line-up ahead of the injured Elliot Duff.

The contest proved relatively comfortable for Redcar, with the home side having just the one shot on target, opting for long shots which failed to challenge their former shot-stopper, Jack Norton.

Despite their lack of offensive pressure, Pickering were the first to have a crack at goal, giving Athletic an early scare as a free header from a corner rattled Norton’s crossbar.

After the early wake up call, former Pike Donny Holdsworth fired the Steelmen ahead in just the 11th minute, feeding Coleman with a delightful back heel, before pouncing on the keeper’s loose block to pick out the top right corner with a powerful volley.

The Steelmen continued to press the Town backline in search of a second, with Walker skewing an effort wide of the right-hand post, before goalkeeper Curtis Richardson was forced to react to deny Holdsworth a second from ten yards.

Shortly after the half hour mark, Donny breached the defence yet again, driving a low effort beneath Richardson to grab himself a brace, despite the hosts claim of a handball in the build-up.

It wasn’t until after the break that either side threatened the scoreline again, with Jamie Thornton missing a golden opportunity to pull a goal back for the hosts, blazing over the bar from close-range.

Mere minutes later, Athletic took advantage of the reprieve, extending the lead to three through Sonni Coleman. The forward met Walker’s dinked cross with a perfect diving header, which Richardson could only push as far away as the inner side netting.

Pickering right-back Tom Godden had been the standout player for his side, and with just under 20 minutes to go forced Norton into making his only save of the afternoon, dropping to the ground quickly to claim the well struck effort.

Isaac Walker was still in search of a goal to show for his performance, the winger falling just short as he fired over the bar after lively substitute Connor Smith had set him through on goal.

The Steelmen would have one last clear-cut effort at increasing the advantage, with late introduction Sam Conway pulling the trigger from range, his attempt curling agonisingly wide of Richardson’s left post.

Attendance: 113.

Redcar Goal Scorers: Brandon Holdsworth (12, 35), Sonni Coleman (55).
