Newton Aycliffe vs Redcar Athletic

Stoppage time heartbreak as Forster loses first match in charge.

Gary Forster’s first match at the helm ended in an unlucky defeat, as title-fighting Newton Aycliffe delivered a gutting stoppage time blow to steal all three points.

The home side held the upper hand for the majority of the contest, after Liam Adamson’s headed finish inside quarter of an hour sealed an early lead.

Stoppage time substitute Owen Clarkson was the man on hand to poke home for Redcar’s well deserved equaliser, only for celebrations to be cruelly cut short by a last gasp tap-in from Aycliffe danger man Liam Jarvie.

Conditions at The SecuriCorp stadium were understandably poor, with the match one of only four to survive the weather across the Northern League, leaving the pitch heavy, cutting up more and more as the game progressed.

The Steelmen had the better of the early opportunities, and the best of which fell to Sonni Coleman. It was a delightful cross from Donny Holdsworth which picked out the forward, whose headed attempt ultimately dropped just wide of the target.

Newton Aycliffe found success going forward across the contest, with the attacking duo of Liam Adamson and Liam Jarvie causing all sorts of problems for Redcar’s backline.

After just quarter of an hour, the two combined for the first time to put the hosts ahead, as Liam Jarvie’s back post cross was met by a stooping header from his strike partner, which Jack Norton couldn’t keep out.

The home side continued to apply attacking pressure on Athletic, with Forster’s side fortunate the deficit remained at one at the break, as both Ferguson and Jarvie missed golden opportunities to extend Aycliffe’s lead.

On the brink of half time, Jack Norton was called into action to prevent a close-range volley from Liam Adamson from doubling the lead. The shot-stopper flew across goal to acrobatically tip the effort over the bar, keeping his side in the contest.

After the restart, Redcar looked a much improved side, as Aycliffe’s domination of the game started to slip away, and it was the visitors who were enjoying the bulk of the chances.

Alfie Conway let fly first, six minutes into the half, unleashing a rocket which sailed just over the bar after his driving run down the right flank.

A golden opportunity for the Steelmen to draw level came shortly after the hour mark, as Conway picked out Mason McNeill with an incisive long ball. McNeill rounded a forlorn Decklan Greenwood, but couldn’t quite squeeze his effort into the net from a tight angle on the right.

Finally, with the contest drawing to a close, Gary Forster’s side found their deserved equaliser, late introduction Owen Clarkson the scorer, rolling the ball into the bottom left corner with his first touch, after Aycliffe’s substitute keeper Adam McHugh spilled a routine catch into his path.

Athletic’s celebrations would be cruelly cut short, however, as the home side’s ruthless partnership linked up once more, with Adamson squaring the ball to Jarvie, to stride home into an open net, stripping Gary Forster of a well merited point in his first match in charge of the club.

Attendance: 125.

Goal Scorers: Owen Clarkson (90+1).
