Recap

Guisborough Town 2-2 Redcar Athletic

Guisborough: Benjamin Cummins (3’), Tyrone O’Neil (17’)

Steelmen: Liam Jarvie (13’), Isaac Walker (27’)

Redcar Athletic were twice forced to fight from behind, as the spoils were shared on derby day.

New man Liam Jarvie was on target for the second time in as many games, as he swept home Isaac Walker’s cross to cancel out Ben Cummins’ early opener.

The winger seized an opportunity of his own to restore parity for a second time, keeping his composure from the spot in response to Tyrone O’Neil’s simple finish.

Injuries and stoppages broke the momentum in the second period, as the contest descended into more of a derby, and the Steelmen were made to settle for only a third point in five league games.

Just short of 600 spectators packed the King George V Ground, with those of a Guisborough persuasion treat to the perfect start, courtesy of debutant Ben Cummins’ precise drive from distance.

A goal in arrears, Redcar sought an instant response, as Robert Dean reacted quickly to deny Oscar Fletcher down the right flank, before Isaac Walker’s volleyed rebound deflected clear.

The forward was involved once again in fashioning the leveller, fizzing the ball across the face of goal, with Liam Jarvie on hand in the centre to prod it home.

Parity wouldn’t last long, as Kurtis Howes nodded Callum Williams’ cross down the throat of Jack Norton, and former Middlesbrough man Tyrone O’Neil followed in for an uncontested finish.

Despite trailing, the Steelmen had seen the better of the chances during the opening quarter, with only another timely block from a sprawling Robert Dean denying Danny Boyle a deserved equaliser.

The goalscoring duo combined again on the brink of the half hour mark, as a shove in the back of Liam Jarvie earned Athletic a spot kick, and Isaac Walker made no mistake dispatching it down the centre.

Often scoring in bursts, Walker was gifted a gilt-edged opportunity to see the Steelmen in ahead at the break, looking to lob a forlorn Dean from the midfield, only lacking the accuracy needed on his looping effort.

Redcar made the brighter start to the second period, as Oscar Fletcher forced another loose save from Robert Dean, who recovered well to deny a lurking Liam Jarvie.

Calls for another penalty rang out after a poor challenge in the area, with Anthony Bell brought down from behind, to no wrong-doing according to the officials.

A counter-attack with numbers over almost made the penalty call irrelevant, as Boyle found Jarvie in support, but a fantastic sliding intervention from Alex Nelson cleared the danger.

The final half hour of the derby fell foul to a number of injuries and fracas, with Joe Thompson leaving the field after lengthy treatment, whilst Boyle and Jarvie continued after slight knocks.

Another mistake and recovery from Dean dashed Redcar’s hopes of a winner, as the shot-stopper was beaten to a long ball by substitute Sonni Coleman, but reacted in haste to deny the forward’s turning effort.

Rising aggression eventually reached a head on the stroke of the 90, as after four Athletic players made the referee’s book, a second yellow for Guisborough’s Joe Pickett reduced the hosts to ten.

Much like at the weekend, a late opportunity for the Steelmen to snatch all three points was thwarted by the woodwork, as an imperious Nathan Guru’s deep cross was nodded onto the frame of the goal by an ever-frustrated Matty Tymon, and the honours ended even.
