Recap

England star Oscar Fletcher inspired a buoyant Redcar to victory by the odd goal in seven, in front of a season best crowd at Green Lane.

An unexceptional first half saw Danny Boyle slot the Steelmen in front, without an indication of the chaos to come.

Donny Holdsworth’s hat-trick gave Redcar the edge come the final whistle, as an otherwise blunt West Auckland conjured a treble to make a routine three points a close-run affair.

Young Oscar Fletcher almost grasped the perfect start for Athletic, as his low drive was gathered at the second time of asking by Auckland’s Daniel Cameron, with Danny Boyle lurking.

The Steelmen midfielder had a more concrete opportunity some minutes later, rattling the upright with a stab across goal, before ruffling the side netting with his whipped follow up.

It was Danny Boyle who finally made the best of a poor first period, as he was slipped through by Craig Hutchinson, and kept his composure to slide Redcar in front.

Athletic faced little in the way of competition before the break, as West had struggled to make anything stick in attack, with Joshua’s Scott’s skewed effort off the post their only real sight at goal.

Jordan Blinco made quick work of his side’s first half shortcomings after the restart, as he pounced on a loose stop from Jack Norton to drive Auckland level after a mere 30 seconds.

Redcar produced the perfect response to the setback, as Oscar Fletcher’s deep corner picked out Daryll Hall, whose cushioned header teed up Donny Holdsworth to lash the Steelmen back in front.

The Athletic goal-getter was yet again on the scoresheet minutes later, as an incredible, incisive long ball from Oscar Fletcher left him with masses of space, and he provided the tidy finish to match.

Despite offering very little in the first hour of the contest, West Auckland were level by the 70th minute. A mistake gave Jordan Blinco the chance to nod his side back within one, before Joshua Scott poked home from Corey Nicholson’s cross to compound Redcar’s misery.

Jordan Blinco gave a further warning in the following minutes, as his swerving strike from distance rattled Norton’s crossbar, leaving Green Lane holding its breath.

Finally, with ten minutes to go, Oscar Fletcher stepped up once again, ploughing through the West defence, before his incisive pass picked out Holdsworth to blast the Steelmen back into the lead.

The duo left the field to a standing ovation not long after their latest link up, having entertained both the Redcar faithful, and a number of newcomers, on a great afternoon for the football club.
