Substitute Cam Thomson opened his account in sensational fashion, as Redcar Athletic’s Northern League success continued against the ten men of Whitley Bay.

 Goalless when visiting captain Mikel Thompson walked for an ill-timed lunge on Chay Liddle, Kevin Burgess rose to break the deadlock on the brink of halfway.

Goals from Curtis Round and Adam Boyes took the contest beyond the reach of Whitley Bay, Cam Thomson picking out the stanchion with a spectacular finish to keep Redcar in top spot.

Just three days on from victory over Crook Town, Carl Jarrett’s hand was forced into a lone change, Mark Anderson returning from illness to take the place of the since departed Layton Watts.

Much the favourites, Redcar started the contest the brighter amidst high gusts of wind, Jack Blackford dancing through a sea of blue to force an early stop from Dan Gladstone.

The Whitley Bay shot-stopper proved a regular feature across ninety minutes, on hand to deny Oscar Fletcher from Adam Boyes’ long ball, the forward himself dealt the same fate moments later.

A poor challenge from Danni Lay soon caused uproar from the visiting bench, more so when Mikel Thompson saw red for a horrific lunge on Chay Liddle.

A man advantage to boot, the Steelmen continued to cause problems, Gladstone tipping the finessed attempt of Jack Blackford behind off the crossbar.

Redcar’s creative spark finally came through Mark Anderson, the midfielder turning a dead ball into the path of Kevin Burgess, who broke Dan Gladstone’s resolve with a thumping header.

The aerial battle continued as a way of success when play resumed, Adam Boyes climbing to turn Jack Blackford’s delivery high of the mark.

Curtis Round met Mark Anderson’s dead ball with a delightful flick off his iconic man-bun, Gladstone left with little chance to protect his far corner.

The shot-stopper finally got his gloves to a low drive from Mark Anderson moments later, fortunately not with the conviction to deny a lurking Adam Boyes.

An injury to the tenacious Jack Blackford paved the way for Cam Thomson to enter the fray, the forward unleashing a warning strike curled towards the far stanchion, but an inch too high.

The former Under-23s star made no mistake on his second attempt, veering inside from the right flank to leave little chance for Gladstone, his effort driven through bodies and into the roof of the net.

Adam Boyes enjoyed one last opportunity to put the sword to Whitley Bay, the visitors able to breathe a sigh of relief as his connection on Cam Thomson’s seeking ball proved too tame to beat Dan Gladstone.
