110 years separates the founding of us and our next opponents, and yet we both are now in the exact same league.
Another match for the Steelmen, and another home game too. Tomorrow we host Ashington in our 12th league game of the season. 48 goals scored, and we aren’t even halfway through the campaign
4 of the league’s top 5 goalscorers all play for us, with Cameron Wilson of Matlock Town being joined by Adam Boyes, Bradley Fewster, Oscar Fletcher and Louis Johnson.
The club is still one of the highest scoring teams in the country, with the Steelmen now just one goal behind Elburton Villa of Step 6.
I will keep you posted on this stat, and the second we go past them, I will post it.
So far this month, our form has been borderline perfect, with the club sat on 4 wins from 4, and 20 goals scored from those 4.
Oscar Fletcher’s 4 goals in the match against Grimsby Borough has also brought him further into the limelight, alongisde the likes of Louis Johnson and Adam Boyes, with Saturday’s opponents labelling us as “their toughest test of the season”
Whether you want to call our performances a rout, thrashing, domination or demolition, there is no denying that Steelmen on the pitch means there will be goals.
As for our next opponents, Ashington have had a varied start to the season, with the side sat in 16th in the league, level on points with Hallam and Lincoln United, and just one win away from going up to 10th.
A tricky start to the season saw the Colliers have to wait until the 20th September for their first league win, which was a 2-1 victory against Ossett United.
They followed that however with another 2 wins, before a very difficult run in which they faced Bradford PA and Emley, before facing us, North Ferriby and Grimsby Borough, meaning they play 5 of the teams in the top 6 in the span of under a month.
A 2-1 defeat to Bradford PA and a 3-0 defeat to Emley could mark the start of a torrid time for Ashington, and with the form we are in, it may only get worse.
Now, before I sign off, I just wanted to also give a little history lesson for you all.
Here are some events that all happened closer in date to the founding of Ashington AFC than the founding of us to Ashington:
– The adoption of the Declaration of Independence
– The French Revolution
– The first ever census in the UK
– The Louisiana Purchase
– The Napoleonic Wars
– The eruption of Krakatoa
– The invention of the aeroplane
and
– The Industrial Revolution
Just thought that was a fun bit of trivia.
If that ever wins you a pub quiz, then A) You can thank me later, but also B) please let me know what pub quizzes are asking about us and Ashington.
That’s all from me, if you’re at the match then see tomorrow evening, but if not then there will be live match updates on our X (Twitter) page.
Up the Steelmen!
