MATCH REPORT
Redcar Athletic became champions in all but name with a victory over Blyth Town.
Cameron Gascoigne slammed the ball past his own goalkeeper to put Redcar Athletic on the precipice of promotion.
The boss alleged that his side were far from their best, but remained thrilled regardless to have the title all but settled.
He praised his Steelmen for their efforts in a long and gruelling season, commenting on the mentality and character of the club amid his delight.
“If I’m honest, the game was frustrating to watch.” He said. “I don’t think we actually played particularly well.”
“Credit to Blyth (Town). I thought they were very good today. They played well.
“All I can say is that I’m just chuffed to bits to get over the line. It’s been an up and down season. We’ve had some good times and bad times. Frustrating times.
“At the end of the day, all that matters is getting over the line. Like I said to the lads at the beginning of the season, it’s all about winning.
“Today, we’ve won the game 1-0, and we should lift that trophy next week. That’s what we set out to do at the beginning of the season.
“All the credit goes to the lads. They’ve got stuck in well, and they’ve battled like hell.
“We’ve played some good teams in the last few weeks. They’ve kept going. Lots of people thought we would’ve fallen to pieces, looking at the teams we’ve had to play.
“I think it just shows the character that we’ve got as a club.”
