Recap

Redcar Athletic edged out Boro Rangers in a dramatic North Riding Senior Cup tie, destined to be decided from the spot.

Bradley Fewster poked the Steelmen into the lead with an hour on the clock, his effort soon cancelled out by a sweet strike from Harry Thompson.

Priestley Griffiths netted the decisive blow in the shootout, as Josh Mazfari denied Owen Burns to see Redcar safely through to the semifinals.

In control of the tie from minute-one-through-ninety, goalmouth woes continued to plague the Steelmen.

Chay Liddle was the first to force an opening, pulling the ball back across the face of goal, where Bradley Fewster couldn’t reach to turn it past Danny Horner.

In perhaps the best opportunity of the evening, Fewster broke free down the right flank, striking the upright from a tight angle which Horner possibly had covered.

Craig Gott came the closest to breaching Rangers’ defence, first catching the shot-stopper off-guard to earn a corner, before repeating the feat moments later to much the same result.

A rare breakaway lead by Danny Lofts first challenged Josh Mazfari, Stuart Rose lurking to attempt a follow-up, but fended clear.

Redcar Athletic’s decisive moment came as Joe Taylor was given license on the right-hand side, his cross swept into the roof of the net with little fuss by Bradley Fewster.

An acrobatic attempt from Callum Hickman forced Mazfari to claw the ball clear of the stanchion, Danny Lofts first on the scene to skew an effort across the face of goal.

An injury for Callum Guy caused some concern as the clock ticked down.

The forward was sandwiched between two defenders in a nasty challenge, yet unable to make way with three changes made.

Boro Rangers showed more fight as the contest neared its end, space opening up for Harry Thompson to curl home and force the tie to go down to the penalty spot.

Craig Gott stepped up first to send Danny Horner the wrong way, Bradley Fewster and Oscar Fletcher soon following suit.

Owen Burns took charge of Rangers’ third spot kick, his effort the decisive kick of the night as Josh Mazfari sprawled to deny him.

Adam Boyes and Stuart Rose netted to send the shootout down to the last kick apiece, dispatched calmly by Priestley Griffiths to seal a spot in the North Riding Senior Cup semifinals.
