Recap

Redcar Athletic staved off late pressure to beat Whickham for a place in the Isuzu FA Vase Third Round.

Adam Boyes’ fourth goal of the competition made the difference midway through the first half.

A fantastic save from Josh Mazfari – and a dash of good fortune – carried Redcar unscathed to the end, the draw for the Third Round to come on Monday afternoon.

With bodies at somewhat of a low, Carl Jarrett made a lone change to his eleven. Jack Blackford returned from a long absence, taking the place of a cup-tied Callum Guy.

Despite the result, Redcar were far from convincing in the face of a spirited Whickham.

Dom Moan was the first to tempt a save from either shot stopper, striking down the throat of a relatively untroubled Josh Mazfari.

Oscar Fletcher championed the Steelmen’s own offensive pressure, feeding Bradley Fewster to force a save from Adam Cameron, before his own effort was beat clear at the far post.

A poacher’s finish from Adam Boyes changed the complexion of the tie, the forward on hand to steer a loose ball past Adam Cameron.

Scott Lowery’s lunge kept Mark Anderson at bay, the towering Whickham defender close himself to finding the net at the other end, but nodding wide to the relief of those in red.

The Lang Jacks wouldn’t concede victory without a fight and stepped up their efforts come the restart of play.

In a potentially match-defining moment, Josh Mazfari sprawled towards his far top corner to deny Jordan Lavery, the resulting corner nodded onto the woodwork, with nothing to come of the second ball.

Bradley Fewster created Redcar’s best opportunity to put the tie beyond doubt, his looping ball easily controlled by Adam Boyes, but slammed down the throat of Adam Cameron.

Spurred on by a goal line clearance, Whickham’s Sam Johnson glanced a second effort off the upright, late substitute Mason Hardy finding only the gardens behind the goal.

The hosts hounded Redcar’s backline, but to little success, the final whistle still of great relief to those travelling back to Teesside with smiles plastered across their faces.
