Recap

Bradley Fewster rescued the Steelmen’s unbeaten record from the spot as the spoils were shared at Gateway Park.

A historic first meeting between the two clubs, Blyth Town fared perhaps the better under the Northumberland sun, edging possession in a tight first half.

Liam Wotherspoon pounced on a defensive mistake to see Redcar behind, Bradley Fewster on target from the penalty spot to salvage a point in the latter stages of the ninety.

Carl Jarrett made two changes to the side which beat Seaham Red Star on Tuesday evening, Mark Anderson and Jack Blackford preferred from the start having returned from a stint on the sidelines.

Attacking talent aplenty, it was Josh Mazfari who was first into the action, reacting quickly to palm Liam Wotherspoon’s driven effort behind for a corner.

Blyth Town continued to press as the half wore on, Danni Lay forced to shield a loose ball for Mazfari, the shot-stopper later needed to smother Marcus Giles’ attempt at close range.

Redcar worked little in the way of an opening until the restart of play, Oscar Fletcher lacking conviction on his first time strike, condemned to trickle wide of the far post.

A blistering counter finally opened up the affair, Blyth substitute Tom Potter forcing a mistake from Josh Mazfari, and Liam Wotherspoon on hand to punish him.

Falling behind again worked wonders in riling up the Steelmen, Fletcher this time denied by Lewis Baker, his finger-tips stung from deep in the midfield.

Ben Franklin turned the see a golden chance go a-begging for the home side, Josh Mazfari again quick to smother Liam Wotherspoon, albeit only for the following scramble to be called offside.

The introduction of Joe Taylor added much needed impetus to Redcar’s ranks, the midfielder hauled to ground on a charge into the area, and awarded a spot kick.

Bradley Fewster stepped up to the mark after a small commotion, keeping his composure in testing circumstances to send Lewis Baker sprawling in the opposite direction.

Now the better team, Nathan Guru rose to meet Mark Anderson’s in-swinging corner, his effort glanced off the woodwork.

Jack Blackford cut inside with Redcar’s last chance of the afternoon, driven into the grasp of Lewis Baker to mark the end of an entertaining final phase of play.
