Recap
A brace from Mark Anderson helped Redcar Athletic ease past Newcastle Benfield in a second successive five-goal thrashing at Green Lane.
The midfielder buried his tidy double during a formidable first half showing, further goals from Bradley Fewster and Nathan Guru making for a considerable lead come the half.
Newcastle Benfield proved far more competitive when play resumed, still to succumb to a stoppage time strike from late substitute, Cam Thomson.
Unchanged from Saturday’s triumph over Penrith, Redcar’s ruthlessness showed no let up. Carl Jarrett’s men picked up exactly where they left off.
Mark Anderson was the first to make inroads, turning home a weak back-pass inside the opening quarter of an hour, the goal chalked out by a dubious offside call.
The Steelmen’s offensive pressure soon paid dividends, Oscar Fletcher’s through ball splitting the defence to free Bradley Fewster, and the forward to oblige with a delicate, lobbed finish.
Fewster’s early withdrawal came as the only blot on an otherwise perfect evening, his absence on the night soon forgotten as Fletcher continued an onslaught on goal from deep.
Mark Anderson’s delivery fashioned Redcar’s second of the evening, Danni Lay rising to nod the ball back into a dangerous area, and first-time-father Nathan Guru on hand to meet it.
Curtis Round arguably served up a certain goal for Adam Boyes, his cross fizzed to the feet of the front man, yet uncharacteristically glanced wide.
A defensive mistake offered Jack Blackford the run of the right flank, the forward unselfish to find Mark Anderson, who made no mistake unmarked in the middle.
The midfielder had his second not ten minutes later as a loose ball sat up nicely to be hit, his aesthetically-pleasing volley doing exactly that.
An outstanding performance, a treble still alluded Mark Anderson, Jack Blackford again picking him out from the flank, his strike this time dragged wide of the mark.
The healthy margin didn’t deter the Steelmen from making inroads when play resumed, the wind arguably making such fluent football more of a challenge.
Curtis Round again found Adam Boyes with eyes for goal, the forward’s headed effort thumped wide, Jack Blackford dancing through bodies on the flank only to see his own attempt blocked.
Lions’ substitute Oscar Benton looked to be the first to test Josh Mazfari, his strike from the midfield causing no trouble.
The Steelmen’s number-one eventually had work to do to deny Noah Millington, the wide-man mirroring Blackford’s run on the far side, but failing to draw more than a routine stop.
Adam Boyes went close to his deserved spot on the scoresheet, Andrew Grainger the equal to his low effort, as the linesman raised his flag regardless.
Mark Anderson’s long ball finally unlocked the Lions’ tight-knit defence, substitute Cam Thomson tearing his way towards goal, and deceiving Grainger by driving his effort in at the near post.
