The Steel and Iron Cup begins with a free heritage day this Friday.
Redcar Athletic have joined forces with Land of Iron and the Tees Valley Combined Authority to launch the Steel and Iron Cup here at Green Lane.
Inspired by the historic Bury Cup, the inaugural heritage weekend pits the Steelmen against Barrow-in-Furness’s Holker Old Boys, the match to take place on Saturday 20th July, at 3pm.

OVERVIEW
What is the Steel and Iron Cup?
Born from a chance conversation between staff at both Redcar Athletic and club partner, Land of Iron, the inaugural Steel and Iron Cup is a two-day heritage festival, celebrating the rich steel-making past of Redcar, and our first competitor, Holker Old Boys.
The event will see live entertainment flood the terraces at Green Lane, from music and children’s activities, to stalls lined with historic artefacts, and a discussion on the past, present and future of steel and iron across Teesside.
On the pitch, the pre-season competition will pit Redcar Athletic against Holker Old Boys of Barrow-in-Furness, a steel-making town in their own right from the North West of the country.
On the launch of the Steel and Iron Cup, Managing Director of Redcar Athletic, Ryan McKnight, said:
“Redcar Athletic are ‘The Steelmen’ and this launch event is hopefully the start of a fantastic annual event that will celebrate the heritage of our steel making and iron mining history.”
“We are grateful to Holker Old Boys of Barrow – a town which has a proud steel making history of its own – for supporting the weekend.
“We’re calling on everyone with a direct or family connection to the steel works or iron mining – and if you don’t, come and find out more about our local history – to come down to Green Lane on the 19th and the 20th July as it will be a fantastic event.”

SCHEDULE
FREE Heritage Day | Friday 19th July | 3pm
The Steel and Iron Cup kicks off this Friday with an afternoon in honour of our steel-making past, befit with stalls, historic artefacts, live music, children’s activities, and a live discussion on the past and future of the industry from 7pm.
Entry into Green Lane on Friday is completely free, and the club would invite all with both a connection to steel and iron, or the local area, to come and celebrate our shared heritage together.
