The post-match thoughts of First Team boss Carl Jarrett on a 2-1 win over Thornaby.

Carl Jarrett praised the attitude of his youthful side in a fourth successive pre-season triumph, a physical Thornaby narrowly beaten by two goals to one.

The boss gave the nod to a number of trialists in a much changed team from the weekend, keen to share minutes around his squad ahead of a busy opening to the Northern League season.

Quick out of the traps, a trialist opened the scoring within the opening five minutes, Bradley Fewster soon doubling the tally with his sixth of the campaign.

Injuries to both Craig Gott and Oscar Fletcher damaged momentum as the bout neared its end, a defensive mistake offering Thornaby a late consolation, which could well have proved more.

Not the prettiest encounter by a long margin, Carl Jarrett was pleased by the effort his small squad showed, praising their attitude in the face of a fresh, tough-tackling Thornaby side.

“It was one of those games tonight.” He said.

“You could see with the squad that we had, the players that are nursing injuries, and the people that are away, it was a typical pre-season game.

“I just said to the lads there, I can’t fault the attitude tonight, or the workrate that they put in to that game, because they were ran off the field by the end.

“You could tell in a way that they (Thornaby) were sat there with about 18, 19 players, whatever it is, making changes every 15 minutes.

“We had two substitutes tonight.

“We’ve got seven or eight players that were all missing and I couldn’t actually change it around to give the lads a rest.

“They were ran off their feet, but they put a really good effort in.”

“As the game goes on, you get more tired, you make sloppy decisions. You’re not passing like you should be, fluently, and you give the ball away a little bit more.”

“Tonight, it was one of those cases where I wasn’t really interested in the result.” Jarrett continued. “We knew what we were going to get.”

“It was more about seeing a couple of these trialists that we’ve brought in, to have a good look at them, to see what they could do.

“Also, just a really really good training session.

“We got good minutes in the bank tonight, especially against Thornaby, because we knew they were going to keep on pushing us.”
