Redcar Athletic stunned Whitby Town in a thrilling return to Green Lane, former Seasider Bradley Fewster stealing the headlines with a well-taken treble.

The rain beating down in a far cry from typical pre-season conditions, goals from Chay Liddle and Adam Boyes had the Steelmen by far the happier at the break.

Bradley Fewster snatched the spotlight come an even wetter restart to play, putting his former side to the sword with a hat-trick simply to be described as clinical.

A miserable, drizzly afternoon on the Redcar seafront, or as we call it, July, football‘s dramatic return to Green Lane certainly lived up to expectations.

Craig Gott stung the fingertips of Shane Bland with barely 30 seconds on the clock, driving his next effort over the bar as Oscar Fletcher forced a routine save.

Stephen Walker’s low delivery caused a lone moment of panic amongst the Redcar defence, flashed across the face of goal with no white shirt to meet it.

A loose ball in the area offered a persistent Chay Liddle his first goal for the club, his low effort deflected beyond Shane Bland to open the scoring.

Oscar Fletcher’s looped through ball made for a quick second, Adam Boyes with fine control to meet it, and the striker’s finish to match.

The forward arguably should have taken a brace as heavy rain marked the start of the second half, glancing a neat through ball off the outstretched leg of Jacob Bulmer, a trialist in the Seasiders’ net.

A fine stop at one end, Josh Mazfari made his lone contribution in the aftermath, forced to sprawl to his left to keep out the ferocious effort of Nathan Thomas.

Oscar Fletcher continued his fine form in the heart of the Redcar midfield, successful pressure on the Seasiders’ backline feeding Bradley Fewster’s devastating curled finish beyond the reach of Jacob Bulmer.

Authoritative throughout, the one blot on Athletic’s afternoon came through Nathan Thomas, the forward applying a neat finish to an incisive move from the back.

Any hope the Seasiders’ carried of sparking a revival was unravelled by a poor defensive mistake, Bradley Fewster on hand to capitalise with due composure.

The perfect ending to a fine afternoon, albeit a wet one, Jack Blackford’s silky footwork made way for one last delivery, and Fewster’s predatory instincts had him in good standing to turn home a hat-trick.
