2 games, 2 wins, 6 points and 12 goals scored – I have to be happy with that return. Although in patches on Saturday against a very useful Prudhoe side, we looked a little bit rusty, that can’t be said of the 7-0 away demolition of Wolviston last night. At times the team looked very impressive. And overall the performance was controlled and ruthless. It is very pleasing to see the transfer from the training pitch to the game. A few new players have settled in really well e.g. Sean Davies at centre back, and Anthony Jones and Bryan Stewart in the front 3 – both of whom have scored in both games so far.

This week in the cup versus newcomers South Shields reserves we may be taking a risk. It’s fair to say we know nothing about them, yet we intend to rest several key players before very tough games on Monday at Home to Cleator Moor, and less than 48 hours later away to in-form Richmond Town. In no way are we disrespecting our opponents or the cup. We very much want to win. However, we have been given 10 fixtures in 4 weeks, and more importantly 4 fixtures in 8 days. Quite simply, no player in the first week of the season should have to contend with that when they are nowhere near peak fitness, never mind some of our more ‘experienced’ lads. Their bodies wouldn’t handle it. So we will use a mixture of teenagers from the reserves and first team hopefuls returning from holidays. The positive to take from it, is that it’ll allow some of our younger potential to experience a tough first team game.

I’m sure they’ll enjoy it, and lets hope our new friends from South Shields enjoy their trip down the coast to Redcar.
