Redcar Athletic FC 2 - 2 Jarrow FC

Away | 08 September 2018 | Attendance: 87
Jarrow took the lead in the 11th minute with the first real opportunity of the game when Kris Allen's ball through the middle saw JONATHAN HIGHAM spring Redcar Athletic's offside trap to race clear 8 to the box before firing his shot under keeper Will Lawrence into the centre of the goal. Redcar Athletic came close to earning an equaliser just 3 minutes later with a move started by Michael Woodhouse but when his run was stopped it was picked up by Gary Wood, who then fed it Sam Calvert and after finding no way through the home defence, he then returned it back for Gary Wood to fire in a 25 yard drive which just flashed past the wrong side of the right hand post. The Teessiders came even closer to getting in the 22nd minute when Chris Bivens throw-in on the right picked put Sam Calvert who then spotted the run of Anthony Jones into box and played it through to him but he was denied getting on the scoresheet  when Jarrow keeper Jak Wells dived full stretch to turn his low shot round the left hand post. On the half hour mark Redcar Athletic keeper Will Lawrence did an almost carbon copy save to prevent Paul Muir from doubling Jarrow's lead with his fierce low drive from fully 35 yards out. From the corner kick into the Redcar Athletic penalty area the ball deflected into the path of Kris Allen 8 yards out and Will Lawrence to throw himself forward to block the Jarrow skipper's hard drive with his body to keep the deficit at 1 goal. The final real goalscoring opportunity of the half came in the 35th minute when Chris Bivens picked out Anthony Jones on the right and he then played it forward into the Jarrow penalty area for the overlapping run of Gary Redman, who then saw his shot turned round the near right hand

After a quiet opening 15 minutes of the 2nd half the next ninety seconds was truly dramatic and showed how quickly fortunes in a game can change. In the 61st minute Lee Farrington's run from Gary Wood's curled ball forward got him to the left by-line then after he held play up, he made a short pass to Jordan Rivis, who drilled it low across the Jarrow penalty area for Michael Woodhouse to meet it on the run 8 yards out, but his shot hit the thigh of Kris Allen, who was on the goal line and spun over the bar. That near miss seemed to cost Redcar Athletic dear when 90 seconds later Jonathan Higham got away down the right before drilling the ball low across the penalty area and was picked up by LUKE LLOYD who firstly neatly sidestepped the challenge by Chris Bivens, then fired past keeper Will Lawrence into the net to double Jarrow's lead. It was almost 3-0 on 74 minutes but Jonathan Higham saw his zinger of shot from 25 yards out crash back off the right hand post. Time was not on Redcar Athletic's side and with 3 minutes remaining Sam Calvert seemed to waste an opportunity to pull 1 goal back when, after being put clean through by a great pass from Michael Woodhouse he fired his straight at keeper Jak Wells, but he then reacted quickly to retrieve the loose ball to set up SAM WEBSTER, who took a couple of touches before calmly stroking it into the left hand side of the net. From the kick off Redcar Athletic almost immediately regained possession of the ball and Jordan Rivis fired it forward for substitute Adam Preston to win the chase before firing in a shot but defender Sam Attewell somehow managed to slide in deflect the effect wide of the far right hand post. Jarrow looked to be holding on for the win but in 2nd minute of injury time Sam Webster was fouled 40 yards out from goal and substitute Joe Bennett's high free kick into the penalty area was headed down by Stuart Browne with the aid of a deflection into the path of GARY WOOD, who hammered the ball low into the net from 8 yards out. Redcar Athletic who had just rescued a point came close to grabbing all 3 in apulsating finish to the match when in 4th minute of injury time Jordan Rivis fired a curled ball forward putting Sam Calvert clear in on goal. However it was not to be as Sam Calvert tried to curl his effort low round the keeper but put it too close to him and Jak Wells managed to grab hold of the ball to a massive sigh of relief from the home crowd. As keeper Jak Wells got back to his feet the referee blew his whistle for full time so Sam Calvert's chance was the last kick of the game and although Redcar Athletic were disappointed not to have gone home with the 3 points, they were more than happy with the draw given that with 3 minutes remaining they were 2-0 down.
